The role
We are looking for a suitably qualified dentist for the post of Clinical Lecturer in Oral Surgery.
You will be required to become actively involved in the teaching and research programmes of the School of Dental Sciences and potentially across the Faculty of Medical Sciences and University.
In research, you will be expected to contribute to existing research activity in translational oral biosciences, applied oral health and/or dental education, developing towards independence as a researcher.
In teaching, you will be expected to contribute to academic and clinical teaching on our undergraduate clinical BDS and BSc courses and our developing portfolio of postgraduate courses.
In addition, candidates will have the opportunity to undertake clinical work in the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation trust and potentially other settings across the region. Appropriately qualified candidates will be expected to complete an approved specialty training programme in oral surgery leading to CCST in oral surgery.
The post has approval for specialty training by the Postgraduate Dean and if specialty training is to be undertaken, the successful candidate will be expected to fulfill benchmarking requirements via NHS Specialty Training National Recruitment.

Key Accountabilities
• Design and deliver high quality teaching and assesment on our undergrdaute and postgraduate programmes
• Provide a range of timely student support to enhance student experience and achievements, including personal tutoring
• Take responsibility for a defined administrative role such as course leadership, assessment leadership or roles in admissions or student support and progressions
• Provide clinical training and supervision for clinical students in the area of oral surgery
• Contribute to a programme of high-quality research in translational oral biosciences, applied oral health and/or dental education including presenting and publishing findings
• Attract new research funding and build networks of collaborators
• Supervise student research projects including postgraduate research supervision
• Undertake academic, scholarly, and allocated administrative duties as required by the Head of Schoolin the area of oral surgery, potentially as part of specialty training
• Where an honorary NTN is awarded, undertake specialty training in oral surgery, or where this is not approriate, deliver oral surgery clinical activity for our partner trusts
The Person (Essential)
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
• Detailed clinical knowledge in the field of Oral Surgery at a level applicable to teaching on the undergraduate BDS/BSc curriculum
• Academic teaching experience and clinical chairside dental teaching experience
• Experience of undertaking research in one or more of translational oral biosciences, applied oral health and dental education
• Evidence of publication within peer reviewed journals
• Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English, adequate to enable effective communication about dental topics with patients and colleagues
• Demonstrates appropriate technical and clinical competence in oral surgery and provides evidence of the development of diagnostic skills and clinical judgement
Desirable
• Experience of teaching leadership including curriculum design and improvement, assessment design and delivery, quality assurance and/or student support
• An awareness of significant developments in oral surgery globally and in the UK.
• Supervision of postgraduate students in research
• Experience of preparing research proposals for submission to competitive funding organisations/industry
• Satisfied in UK National Recruitment specialty training benchmarking or demonstrated eligibility for this

Qualifications
• BDS Degree
• Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC) (or eligibility for such)
• PhD (or equivalent) submitted for examination at time of application, in a topic related to dentistry or oral health that aligns to the school’s research themes
• Eligible for honorary clinical status with the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and NTN (A) (if specialty training is to be undertaken)
• Fellowship of HEA or equivalent and/or an academic teaching qualification.
• Demonstrates the competencies required at the end of a UK Dental Core Training Programme Year 2 by either: Evidence of completion of DCT 2/3 or National Certificate of Dental Core Equivalence at the time of application
Desirable
• Diploma of Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS)/Membership of the Joint Faculties (MJDF) or equivalent
