We are seeking an experienced and visionary Director of Research and Innovation to lead our R&D – GTT/Innovation team. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of our research, innovation, and technical capability, driving advancements across durability, fatigue, simulation, and new product development within a global medical device organisation.
Key Responsibilities
1. Lead, manage, and allocate technical resources to support research and innovation activities across the department.
2. Oversee advanced design activities as part of the technical feasibility process in R&D (Pre Design Control SCF related activity).
3. Lead the durability and fatigue team, covering developments in Glasgow and other Terumo affiliates as agreed.
4. Manage simulation analysis internally and externally (FEA and CFD).
5. Advise and lead on durability physical testing internally and with external partners.
6. Develop and manage external academic collaborations, focusing on durability, fatigue, and simulation.
7. Own the SCF Process and collaborate with Marketing on pipeline prioritisation.
8. Manage internal IP processes and liaise with internal IP counsel.
9. Promote and facilitate an innovation culture across the company.
10. Line management of engineers/scientists, CAD team, and prototyping team.
11. Drive technology advancements in durability, fatigue, and analytical tool development.
12. Collaborate with R&D and Marketing on business cases for new product concepts.
13. Ensure compliance with all quality systems and regulatory requirements (ISO, CFR Part, MDSAP, MDD, MDR).
14. Create a safety culture and ensure compliance with Environmental Health and Safety standards.
Candidate Requirements
15. Degree in Engineering or Science (BSc minimum; MSc or PhD preferred).
16. Significant experience in Class II/III medical device development, ideally vascular devices.
17. Strong interpersonal, planning, and organisational skills.
18. Budget planning and financial management skills.
19. Understanding of manufacturing processes for Open and Endovascular devices.
20. Experience in team development and mentoring.
21. Working knowledge of CAD (SolidWorks), Excel, and Word.
22. Excellent communication, presentation, and reporting skills.
