Merchant Operations at GoCardless

This role sits in the Merchant Operations Group, responsible for high-throughput processes and systems such as KYC and onboarding, customer support, payment operations, and billing. The team ensures these functions run efficiently to scale the business and maintain healthy margins, serving both external and internal customers globally.


The role

The role leads a small operational team of credit risk underwriters, safeguarding financial health by ensuring robust credit evaluation and proactive risk management. It suits someone hands-on, with a high degree of autonomy, capable of guiding a team through change.


What excites you


Core Responsibilities

* Oversee credit risk reviews and high-risk onboarding processes that evaluate the creditworthiness of prospective customers and risks in sales deals; advise sales leadership on risk-adjusted pricing as needed.
* Review complex credit decisions and escalations; make final determinations on approvals or conditions, escalating to senior management as needed.
* Oversee processes that manage existing customer risk, including requests for limit increases or new product access.
* Continuously monitor existing portfolios; adjust limits, holding periods, cash covers or other mitigation tools as appropriate.
* Drive proactive risk mitigation by leading the team in quickly actioning risk alerts to prevent or minimise losses.
* Participate in executive-level deal reviews as needed.


Leadership

* Develop and lead a high-performing team of underwriters, providing guidance, support and mentorship, including through disruption and change.
* Set clear goals and objectives for the team and individuals; monitor performance and provide regular feedback and coaching.
* Build bench strength through cross-skilling and training to eliminate single points of failure and enhance performance.
* Instill a culture of ownership and accountability over decision-making, leading by example.


Operational Excellence

* Develop and implement a vision for excellence and improve performance against defined KPIs with regular reporting.
* Participate in strategy definition, roadmapping and deployment.
* Collaborate with engineering and PD teams to define future product direction, agree desired business outcomes and requirements, and influence prioritisation.
* Drive operational efficiency and continuous process improvement; identify bottlenecks, develop SOPs, and implement scalable solutions.
* Maintain controls for SOC1 and financial audits; build and implement QA frameworks to maintain quality and provide feedback.


Experience and Skills

* Experience in a role directly accountable for credit underwriting in a B2B environment of comparable scale.
* Understanding of risks in a bank-to-bank payments business, such as chargebacks.
* Expertise in financial statement analysis, risk modelling, and credit policy adherence.
* Proficiency in data analytics and BI tools.
* Track record of building, growing and retaining a high-performing team.


Skills

* Advocate for effective and balanced risk management while supporting commercial needs with clear standards for acceptable risk.
* Excellent stakeholder management with ability to build strong working relationships with commercial teams.
* Problem solver with strong operational and commercial acumen and deep root-cause analysis skills.

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary ranges depend on role, level, location, and market data. Our approach is to pay between the minimum and mid-point of the pay range (e.g., £76,000 - £95,000) until performance is assessed in role. Offers will consider experience, interview assessments, budgets and parity with colleagues.
