Consultant in Public Health/Consultant in Public Health Medicine: Permanent Appointment

Plymouth City Council

Salary: £94,356 to £108,814 commensurate with experience (NHS Agenda for Change 8D)

Please note, this role is not eligible for visa sponsorship and we can only consider applicants with existing right to work in the UK.

Plymouth offers an exciting and substantial public health challenge in a coastal city with significant deprivation. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to apply creativity and innovation to support health and wellbeing for a population of approximately 265,000.

Plymouth City Council, together with its partners across the city, has taken a system-wide approach to the development of a ‘vibrant waterfront city where an outstanding quality of life is enjoyed by everyone’, as described in our corporate plan. As a unitary Council, there is significant scope to influence the whole system to address the wider determinants of health.

The Public Health Directorate is wide and includes services such as Libraries, Environmental Health, Licensing, Coroners and Registrations and Bereavement Services, Civil Protection and the Health Determinants Research Collaborative. Plymouth has pioneered whole-systems approaches for many years (see the Plymouth Plan) and our integrated commissioning approach means that services are designed around the needs of people.

We are seeking an appropriately qualified public health professional with excellent problem‑solving, communication, political and technical skills, who has the energy and drive to make a major contribution to improving health and reducing inequalities in Plymouth. The post holder will have a senior role within the organisation and will make a significant strategic contribution to the overall Public Health objectives.

The post will lead on health improvement, particularly smoking cessation, healthy weight, physical activity and other related areas, and will provide strategic leadership of community empowerment, leisure and libraries within the Public Health Directorate. There will be connections to healthcare public health as required, and corresponding budgetary and management responsibilities.

This post can be full time, or part time for a minimum of 0.8 FTE, with some flexibility around working hours or a job share.

We are a flexible employer and provide a variety of working arrangements tailored to the needs of each role.

For an informal discussion about this opportunity, please book a call with Professor Steve Maddern, Director of Public Health, via 01752 398606 or steve.maddern@plymouth.gov.uk.

Plymouth City Council is an equal opportunities employer. All applicants will be considered for employment regardless of age, caregiving experience, disability, gender reassignment, marriage/civil partnership, pregnancy/maternity, race, religion/belief, sex or sexual orientation.

As part of our commitment to promoting equality we offer guaranteed interviews to those who meet the essential criteria and are considered disabled, care experienced or an Armed Forces Service Leaver within the last two years.

Closing date: Sunday 24 May
