Locum Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist
UHCW NHS Trust is seeking a full‑time Locum Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist to support our South West Cardiothoracic Centre at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. The role offers a 12‑month locum contract with competitive salary (£109,725‑£145,478 a year) and 30 days annual leave.
Job Summary
The post maintains our current consultant staffing level, providing flexible cover across cardiac theatres, intensive care and perioperative TOE service. The candidate will work an 11‑week cycle, with a week in charge of the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit and the remaining weeks delivering approximately 20 all‑day theatre lists per quarter.
Responsibilities
* Lead and cover cardiac and thoracic operating lists, adjusting workload to clinical need.
* Serve as consultant in charge of the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit for one week each cycle.
* Provide flexible cover for colleagues during annual or study leave, as practicable.
* Contribute significantly to the perioperative TOE service and support surgical programme development.
* Participate in medical audit, continuing medical education, and departmental teaching.
Qualifications
* Essential
o CCT in anaesthesia (or expected within 6 months)
o FRCA (or equivalent)
o Broad, current clinical experience of adult anaesthesia
* Desirable
o Other postgraduate qualification (BSc, MSC or PhD)
o Advanced training or fellowship in an area of anaesthesia
o Experience managing complex cases
Contract & Working Pattern
Full‑time, part‑time option with a 12‑month locum contract. Working pattern includes on‑call commitment (approximately 1 in 11) and prospective cover.
