Senior Engineering Manager - Mechanical
We are recruiting for an experienced Senior Engineering Manager (Mechanical) to lead the delivery of engineering and estates services at a hospital. This is a key leadership role responsible for ensuring the hospital's building services operate safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with statutory regulations, PFI requirements, and healthcare technical standards (HTMs/HBNs).
The position blends strategic planning, operational management, and hands‑on technical oversight, ensuring a high‑quality environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
Act as a senior point of contact for engineering and estates matters, working closely with directors, managers, engineering teams, suppliers, consultants, and regulatory bodies
Ensure all statutory, contractual, and compliance obligations for building and engineering services are met, documented, and audited
Interpret and apply complex technical documents, drawings, and healthcare regulatory guidance
Develop and maintain strategic site plans, risk management strategies, and contingency plans for system failures.
Participate in the out‑of‑hours on‑call rota, providing technical and managerial support during incidents
Lead, motivate, and coordinate engineering staff, promoting strong communication and high‑quality service delivery
Uphold safeguarding responsibilities across all operational areas
Oversee planned and reactive maintenance, inspections, and PPM activities for mechanical plant and equipment
Ensure specialist surveys and inspections are completed and used to inform maintenance and lifecycle planning
Manage maintenance contracts, ensuring value for money and adherence to specification
Maintain accurate estates data, performance records, and compliance documentation
Drive continuous improvement across engineering services, identifying risks early and implementing corrective actions
Manage environmental controls, including water discharge permits and compliance with statutory environmental requirements
Recruit, train, and develop engineering staff, ensuring competency, technical capability, and ongoing professional development
Skills & Experience Required
Relevant qualifications in Facilities Management, Engineering, or related disciplines (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH, IWFM)
Proven experience in a senior technical or engineering leadership role, ideally within healthcare or a highly regulated environment
Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles and healthcare technical standards (HTM 01-08).
AP (Authorised Person) qualifications are highly desirable
Experience managing compliance frameworks, audits, and safe systems of work
Ability to identify early warning signs of technical issues and prevent non‑compliance
Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess labour requirements and technical competency levels
Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management skills, with the ability to engage confidently at all levels
