Overview
Swansea Bay University Health Board has an opportunity to permanently contract the role of Educational Supervisor. Successful candidates would be expected to deliver 2 sessions/7.5 hours per week initially on Monday until September 2026 and on Friday thereafter.
Background
The Dental Teaching Unit currently has 4 Foundation Dentists, supported by Educational Supervisors. Both the Foundation Dentists and Supervisors provide dental sessions to patients of the local area and through 111 in hours access.
The purpose of this post is to work collaboratively with both the Health Board and Wales Deanery to improve, facilitate and develop dental health care services in the SBU area by providing comprehensive general dental services within an NHS environment, effective care to patients and training/mentoring to the Foundation Dentist.
It also involves liaising with the deanery regarding the study day programme, providing direction to the Business Manager, and managing Foundation Dentists and other dental staff on the training side of the unit in line with patient needs and GDS contract.
Education and Training
The post holder will work with the Lead Senior Dentist and the Post‑graduate Deanery to ensure Dental Foundation Trainees achieve the competencies laid out in the Dental Foundation Trainee curriculum.
The post holder must be available for guidance and training of Dental Foundation Trainees and other Dental Care Professionals in training in the unit as agreed with the Lead Senior Dentist.
The post holder may be required to set aside a period of one hour each week for a formal in‑practice seminar with each trainee. This must be in the normal practice working hours and be in protected time.
The post holder will cooperate with the Lead Senior Dentist and Business Manager to provide surgery conditions and facilities to allow the trainees to work at least 28 hours per week when the study day course is running and 35 hours at other times.
The post holder will be responsible for supporting joint working arrangements with the Community Dental Service (CDS) and that trainees receive experience of a multi‑unit, integrated dental environment.
There will be a requirement for the post holder to keep up their CPD in line with General Dental Council regulations.
During the course of their duties, the post‑holder may be asked to attend meetings.
Managing People and Leadership
* Manage the activities in the dental suite (training element) and take responsibility for the overall supervision of clinical processes.
* Cooperate with the Business Manager over matters which affect the smooth running of the service.
* Support regular clinical staff meetings and any other meetings within the training element of the service.
* Provide leadership and assistance to colleagues within the training element of the dental suite, where necessary.
* Liaise with colleagues in the Health Board and Dental Postgraduate Department with specific reference to the dental suite.
* Liaise with General Medical Practitioners, Dental Practitioners and other professionals to provide co‑ordinated care for patients, working with community and integrated services to ensure that patients with special needs are cared for in the most appropriate manner.
* Support the management of referrals of high‑need patients from General Dental Practitioners.
* Work with the Community Dental Service and other Health Board Dental Services based in the Resource Centre to ensure that the dental suite offers an integrated approach to dental care for all groups of patients.
* Work with other services within the Port Talbot Resource Centre to ensure an integrated approach to health care is an ongoing part of the dental suite's service delivery plans.
* Attend meetings and events outside of normal working hours as required.
* Participate in the Health Board's risk management process and in clinical audit and other clinical governance activities within the department, the directorate and the Health Board. Adherence to Caldicot Principles is mandatory.
Clinical
* Provide a full range of routine dental treatment.
* Provide assessment and treatment for adults and children requiring treatment, including those who develop urgent dental problems.
* Identify patients suitable for treatment by the Foundation Trainees.
* Assess individual patient need and ongoing NHS care for patients with more complex treatment requirements, working with Community Dental Services and Hospital Dental Services and referring patients onwards as necessary.
* Ensure that all correspondence regarding patients – such as letters to doctors, dentists and other health care professionals – is dealt with promptly and kept in appropriate order in patients' files.
* Work with others within the Health Board to ensure that patient pathways for dental care are effective and make the best use of clinical resources.
* Be responsible for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the administration of the department.
* Participate and contribute to Clinical Audit in line with the Health Board's policy.
Professional
* Participate in the Health Board's Appraisal Scheme in conjunction with the Supervising Consultant to identify training and development needs.
* Engage in personal and professional development to fulfil Royal College CME requirements.
* Adhere to all Health Board and local policies covering radiation exposures as outlined in IRMER regulations.
* Observe policies and procedures of the Health Board drawn up in consultation with the professions, where they involve clinical matters.
* Understand the principles regarding additional fees: work undertaken during sessions generally does not attract the additional fee, and if a fee is paid, it must be passed to the Health Board; work done in the individual's own time or during unpaid leave may be retained subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service.
