Based in Malta, this role aligns with the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) requirements, covering operational, financial, market, and compliance risks associated with custody, trading, and electronic money activities. The Head of Risk works closely with the Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO) to integrate AML/CTF risk strategies and with the Head of Compliance to ensure regulatory alignment, collaborating with the CEO, CSO, and other leaders to safeguard the organisation in a complex fintech environment.
Key Responsibilities:
* Develop and implement a risk management framework compliant with MiCA, addressing risks related to crypto-asset custody, trading, and EMI operations.
* Conduct regular risk assessments across operational (e.g., platform downtime), financial (e.g., market volatility), and regulatory (e.g., AML/CTF) domains, proposing mitigation strategies.
* Monitor and manage risk exposure, ensuring adequate controls for client asset protection, liquidity, and cybersecurity as mandated by MiCA.
* Partner with the MLRO to assess and mitigate AML/CTF risks, integrating suspicious transaction insights into the broader risk framework, and ensuring cohesive reporting to the MFSA and FIAU.
* Collaborate with the Head of Compliance to align risk policies with MiCA and Maltese regulatory requirements, providing input on compliance audits and regulatory responses.
* Work with the CSO to assess ICT and cybersecurity risks, ensuring a unified approach to operational resilience.
* Provide risk reports to the CEO and MFSA, ensuring transparency and proactive management of emerging risks in the crypto and EMI landscape.
Qualifications:
* Degree in risk management, finance, business, or a related field; professional certifications (e.g., FRM, PRM, CRISC) are highly desirable.
* At least 7-10 years’ experience in risk management leadership, preferably within fintech, crypto-assets, or regulated financial services.
* In-depth knowledge of MiCA risk requirements, crypto market risks, EMI operational frameworks, and AML/CTF regulations.
* Proven ability to design and execute risk management strategies, with strong analytical skills and experience in regulatory reporting.
