Athlone and Alexandra House are inpatient rehabilitation units providing intensive, multidisciplinary rehabilitation in a community setting. Patients are typically admitted as part of a step-down process following an acute hospital stay.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Ward Doctor (Specialty Doctor Grade) to join our team. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will provide day-to-day medical care for patients on the units, clerking admissions, reviewing patients daily, supporting discharge planning, and working closely with our GP Clinical Leads, nurses and therapists.
This is an excellent opportunity for doctors with an interest in rehabilitation, community medicine, or older adult care. While not a training post, successful candidates will receive support for continuing professional development.
Main duties of the job
Clerking and assessment: Clerk patients on admission, take full medical histories, perform examinations, review transfer documentation, and prescribe medications appropriately.
Daily clinical care: Undertake daily reviews, order and action investigations, complete drug charts, liaise with pharmacy and external teams as needed.
Ward rounds & MDT: Prepare for and participate in weekly ward rounds with the GP Clinical Lead and contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings and decision‑making.
Documentation: Complete timely and accurate clinical notes, discharge summaries, and letters in line with GMC and Trust standards.
Acute response: Assess and manage deteriorating patients, accelerate appropriately, and coordinate transfers to acute hospitals when necessary.
Communication: Liaise effectively with patients, families, colleagues and external partners to support safe and timely care and discharge.
Governance & CPD: Participate in audit, clinical governance, and quality improvement activities; maintain appraisal and revalidation compliance.
There may be occasions where the postholder is the only doctor on site with the GP Clinical Lead available remotely, so strong collaborative working with senior nursing and therapy colleagues is essential.
