NHS AfC: Band 7

Main area Neurology. Grade NHS AfC: Band 7 Contract Permanent Hours Full time - 37.5 hours per week Job ref 309-UCLH-7946.

Site: National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery (UCLH), Town London. Salary £58,133 - £65,261 per annum inclusive of HCAS Salary. Closing 10/06/2026 23:59.

Job overview

Recruiting a band 7 Specialised Clinical Physiologist for the Sir Jules Thorn Telemetry Unit. Provide high quality Video‑EEG Telemetry studies for the Epilepsy surgery program and neurological sleep services.

Services delivered by the unit include:

* Diagnostic studies
* Pre‑surgical studies including ictal SPECT
* Invasive studies (subdural and depth (SEEG) electrodes)
* Polysomnography, MSLT and Actigraphy
* At‑Home polysomnography and diagnostic video‑EEG telemetry

Successful candidate will be highly motivated, engaging, and eager to specialise in video‑EEG telemetry and polysomnography.


Main duties of the job

* Provide a highly complex, specialist Clinical Neurophysiology service.
* Undertake interpretation of results and provision of written factual reports, communicating directly with consultant staff regarding any findings.
* Present the findings of the video telemetry studies at the weekly multidisciplinary meeting, and contribute to ward rounds and teaching sessions held on the unit on a regular basis.
* Assist and actively participate in research projects carried out on the telemetry unit.
* Educate and train techniques to new members of staff and demonstrate the telemetry unit activity to professional visitors.
* Provide support to more junior staff on the unit.
* Participate in quality assurance and audit within the department and on a regional basis.

Person specification


Knowledge & Qualifications

* BSc (Hons) in Clinical Physiology (Neurophysiology) or equivalent.
* ECNE Part II or equivalent.
* Postgraduate qualification e.g. STP in neurophysiology or equivalent experience.
* Member of a professional organisation.


Experience

* Can perform the full range of neurophysiological investigations (EEG, EPs, NCS), including reviewing and preparing factual reports.
* Can work autonomously on standard clinical work and under supervision for more complex procedures such as invasive recordings and ECoG.
* Has acquired specialist procedures through accredited courses or equivalent experience.
* Demonstrates continued professional development.
* Can perform long‑term monitoring – video‑EEG telemetry/ambulatory recording, including reviewing and preparing a factual report.
* Experience supervising students or trainees.


Communication

* Communicates effectively and sensitively with all patients, including those with communication difficulties or challenging/aggressive behaviour.
* Communicates with departmental medical staff regarding complex specialist data.
* Communicates effectively with other health care professionals from various disciplines.
* Illustrates and informs visitors about the work of the department.


Skills and Abilities

* Evidence of practical skills to record routine neurophysiology investigations.
* Ability to work in challenging environments.
* Ability to handle patients with challenging or confrontational behaviour.
* Ability to organise and prioritise own work.


Personal and people development

* Experience supervising student staff and visitors.


Specific requirements

* Work flexibly and participate in an on‑call rota.
* Enough manual dexterity to apply electrodes accurately.


Eligibility

* Must be eligible to work in the United Kingdom or meet the criteria for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route.


Other requirements

* The post holder will be required to work flexibly and participate in an on‑call rota.
* The post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020; Disclosure to the Disclosure and Barring Service will be required.
