My client is a prominent global environmental organisation with operational facilities located across the US, Europe and the UK. One of their key divisions in the UK specialises in comprehensive battery recycling and waste management solutions. As a leading authority in waste battery collection and recycling within the UK, this division provides nationwide services for the collection of all types of waste batteries, including both lead acid and non-lead acid varieties, as well as battery-powered appliances.
All collected materials are transported to their headquarters in the West Midlands, where they are meticulously sorted by battery chemistry, carefully dismantled when required, and securely stored until sufficient quantities are ready for recycling. This centralised and systematic process ensures that batteries are managed in an environmentally responsible manner, supporting both regulatory compliance and sustainability goals at the national and international levels.
The Role
Overseeing and optimising the daily operations of the site. Including ensuring smooth workflow, managing resources, maintaining safety and compliance and driving operational efficiency to achieve organisational goals.
Responsibilities
* Managing the day-to-day activities of the operations department and ensuring they run smoothly and efficiently.
* Ensuring adherence to safety regulations, industry standards, and company policies.
* Monitoring and managing operations budgets, expenditures, and optimal utilisation of resources.
* Training, supervising, and mentoring site staff, promoting a positive and productive work environment.
* Identifying areas for improvement and implementing changes to enhance efficiency and productivity.
* Setting and reviewing performance standards to maintain high quality of operations.
* Collaborating with various departments, clients, and stakeholders to ensure smooth operations and address issues effectively.
* Overseeing the upkeep and maintenance of the site and its facilities.
* Managing relationships with contractors.
* Maintaining accurate operational records and reports.
Key Activities
* Developing and implementing operational policies and procedures.
* Monitoring and managing operational budgets, expenditures, and financial performance.
* Tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) and identifying areas for improvement.
* Identifying and mitigating potential risks and issues.
* Addressing operational issues and emergencies effectively.
Qualifications
* A degree in engineering (e.g., mechanical, industrial, chemical), business administration, or a related field.
* COTC Certificate of technical competency required for the role.
Required Skills
* Typically, 5-10 years of experience in plant operations is needed, with increasing levels of responsibility in areas like production, maintenance, or quality control.
* Leadership experience is crucial. This includes supervising teams, managing projects, and making key decisions related to plant operations.
* Strong leadership skills to motivate and guide their teams, foster a positive work environment, and make strategic decisions.
* Effective communication, both written and verbal.
* Must be able to identify and resolve operational issues, manage conflicts, and implement solutions to ensure efficient plant operations.
* A solid understanding of budgeting, cost control, and resource allocation is essential for managing the financial aspects of the plant.
* Needs to be able to adapt to changing technologies, regulations, and business needs by implementing effective change management strategies.
* Competitive base salary to be discussed with candidates on an individual basis.
* Performance based bonus scheme.
* Defined contribution pension, min 6.25% employee contribution with max 10% employer contribution of basic annual salary.
* Death in service cover of 3x salary (if member of pension scheme).
* The role will be based at the site in the West Midlands.
