Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine — Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint Consultant Physicians in Respiratory Medicine, with applications welcome for part‑time or full‑time roles. The post is trust‑wide with outpatient clinics across trust sites and involves consultant cover for the acute respiratory wards at the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital (NSECH). The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop or support sub‑specialist interests within the department, such as cough, lung cancer, pleural disease, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease, asthma and sleep medicine.
Main Duties
The post will be flexibly time‑tabled to meet service demands. A typical week consists of 10 programmed activities (PAs) including 1.5 supportive professional activities (SPAs). Additional SPAs may be available depending on service needs.
The physician will provide:
* Specialist inpatient respiratory care on two 30‑bed wards at NSECH, including an 11‑bed respiratory support unit, with presence from 8 am to 8 pm, 7 days a week;
* Share inpatient responsibilities with other consultant colleagues on the base ward at Wansbeck General Hospital;
* Consultant cover on the acute medicine rota covering the described wards at NSECH;
* Support of lung function laboratories at Wansbeck General Hospital and North Tyneside General Hospital and outlying clinics;
* Participation in established thoracoscopy (NTGH) and EBUS (WGH) services;
* Involvement in outpatient clinics and potential development of new sub‑specialty services;
* Collaboration with multidisciplinary team including respiratory nurse specialists, physiologists, pharmacists and allied health professionals;
* Use of office accommodation and secretarial support as provided; and
* Compliance with GMC registration, revalidation and Code of Good Medical Practice.
Person Specification
* MRCP;
* Full registration on the UK General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register for Respiratory and General Internal Medicine;
* Eligibility for Consultant appointment by an Appointments Committee – candidates within 6 months of CCT may apply;
* Maintaining full GMC registration and revalidation;
* Educational qualification in medicine;
* Research qualification is desirable;
* Possibility to work part‑time with adjustment of duties as required.

This role requires a Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 disclosure and a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
Salary
£109,725 to £145,478 a year, pro rata per annum.
