Senior Health Care Support Worker (SHCSW) Paediatrics
Woodcock ward – a 19‑bedded unit caring for children up to 11 years old. You will act as a positive role model, deliver high‑quality care and broaden your knowledge within the acute paediatrics field. The role requires flexibility, commitment and a willingness to undertake further training.
Shift pattern: long days, nights, weekends and bank holidays (including bank holidays).
Preference: Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, Priority and ‘At Risk’ NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who can demonstrate recent relevant experience as coded in the Person Specification.
Responsibilities
* Provide care to children aged 0‑18 years in accordance with Trust policies.
* Support patients, parents and family members with delegated duties aligned to patient needs.
* Use knowledge and experience to undertake non‑routine duties and make decisions within your area of responsibility.
* Carry out limited clinical duties, including patient observations (blood pressure, oxygen saturation, temperature, pulse, respiration), glucose monitoring, collection and testing of urine, faecal and sputum samples, wound swabs, ECGs, blood taking as applicable.
* Participate in patient assessment and provide holistic care; raise concerns to clinical staff when required.
* Practice safe standards of care following Trust guidelines and policies.
* Ensure infection prevention, health and safety procedures are followed.
* Maintain a clean and safe work environment in line with infection control and patient safety policies.
* Work closely with the multidisciplinary team (medical and nursing) to deliver safe, professional care.
* Record and sign for all observations and care, obtaining countersignature from a registered practitioner where appropriate.
* Support nursing and medical colleagues with procedures, escort patients to scans/x‑rays, assist with transfers.
* Support fluid balance and dietary charts, and report adverse findings to senior staff.
* Assist with patient assessment from admission to discharge, ensuring smooth flow of care.
* Recognise and report incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies to senior staff.
* Maintain confidentiality and comply with Trust data protection acts.
* Promote and safeguard the well‑being of patients, families and colleagues.
* Maintain and share responsibility for ward equipment and stock control.
* Continuously develop professionally through courses and further training.
