Fixed term/Secondment Post to cover Maternity Leave
(January 2026 – November 2026)
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and experienced pharmacist to join NHS Western Isles on a fixed-term or secondment basis to cover maternity leave leading the Primary Care Pharmacy team. This would be an ideal opportunity for someone looking to move into leadership. It allows you to ‘dip your toes’, rather than committing to a leap in!
Working across our remote and rural communities, you will lead prescribing improvement initiatives, provide expert pharmaceutical advice, and contribute to medicines governance and safety. You’ll be part of a small, supportive team committed to delivering high-quality care and innovation in a unique setting.
There is a need to travel to the islands of Harris, North Uist, South Uist, Benbecula and Barra. This is a great chance to see our beautiful island home from Barra to The Butt of Lewis. The scenery is spectacular, the people warm and welcoming – a lot of people come here for a short period and end up making it their forever home!
There are 9 GP practices across the Western Isles and 8 of these provide support to their local communities by dispensing medicines. There are three community pharmacies all based in and around Stornoway.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Support GP practices with prescribing advice and medicines optimisation.
2. Lead quality improvement and safety initiatives.
3. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across primary care.
4. Mentor junior pharmacy staff and contribute to service development.
Essential Criteria:
5. GPhC registration.
6. MPharm or prior and equivalent qualifications
7. Significant post-registration experience.
8. Strong clinical knowledge and communication skills.
9. Leadership and project management experience.
10. Experience in primary care or prescribing support roles.
11. Independent prescribing qualification.
12. Postgraduate qualification in Advanced Pharmacy Practice or undertaking formal training to postgraduate level to achieve competencies of a specialist practitioner.
13. Full driving licence.
The successful applicant will be required to register with the PVG Scheme (Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme). This post is not eligible for relocation expenses.
