A well-established specialist engineering services business operating in the UK electricity infrastructure sector is seeking an experienced Lead Grid & Primary Design Engineer to join its team in Middlesbrough.
The organisation delivers high and low voltage infrastructure solutions across the UK and plays a key role in supporting the growth of private electrical networks for commercial and industrial clients. The Role
This is a client-side position where you will take ownership of grid and primary substation projects from concept through to commissioning. You will lead the design process across the full project lifecycle, ensuring high-quality, compliant engineering solutions are delivered.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage electrical design from outline concept through to detailed design.
Develop and approve 33kV-132kV grid and primary substation designs.
Sign off protection studies, block cable diagrams, set files, and key line diagrams.
Ensure compliance with technical specifications and approve pre-manufacturing drawings.
Work closely with Project Managers, Construction Managers, and wider design teams to deliver projects on time and within budget.
Manage third-party design inputs and ensure alignment with company processes.
Provide accurate technical input throughout the project lifecycle.
Attend UK project sites and meetings when required.
Requirements
HNC (or higher) in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
Proven experience in primary substation design (11kV-132kV) in a lead or senior capacity.
Strong understanding of electrical engineering design within power and distribution networks.
Experience with 132kV substation design, planning, and commissioning.
Knowledge of power transformer design and procurement.
Familiarity with CDM regulations for utility projects.
Experience using ETAP, DigSilent, or similar power system analysis software.
Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites.
