About the role

With a history spanning over 50 years, Bournemouth Film School (BFS) sits at the heart of Arts University Bournemouth and brings together the disciplines of acting, animation, costume, creative writing, dance, film production, make-up, performance design and visual effects. Courses are modelled on contemporary industry practice, contextualised by a philosophy of practical learning in an academic environment.

We are currently looking to recruit a Technician Demonstrator with practical experience in set construction and in film and stop motion animation studio operations to work within our Scenic Services Team.

Competent in set construction activities and in the use of tools and machinery. This element of the role will be informed by your knowledge of workplace health, safety and welfare along with a comprehensive knowledge of carpentry and set construction techniques. Predominantly based in our scenic workshop the construction element of this role also extends to our film studios, two theatre venues and other external venues as required. The successful candidate will also have some knowledge of studio lighting, rigging, and production studio infrastructure.

Providing comprehensive hands-on support and advice to students throughout studio production activities, you will contribute to team deliverables across Bournemouth Film School, devising and delivering technical inductions, demonstrations and workshops, equipping students with the necessary knowledge and skills to practice their craft safely and competently.

Proficient in the field and highly competent, you will provide expert advice and comprehensive support across technical aspects of learning and teaching activities, including individual, group and collaborative student projects, which take place in dedicated university studios and on location. You will ensure the on-going availability of serviceable equipment and resources through proactive and reactive maintenance, and contribute to the effective and efficient operation of equipment and resources stores, ensuring accurate asset management procedures are maintained, including completing regular audits, inventories and stock checks.

Ideally educated to undergraduate degree level, you must hold a minimum level 3 qualification in a relevant subject, and GCSE or equivalent, minimum grade C/5, English and Maths. You will be encouraged to participate in continuous professional development to ensure subject knowledge and experience is maintained in line with industry trends. Experience of working in a film/television studio and/or stop motion animation professional environment, and having contributed to supporting learners in a further or higher education context would be advantageous.

You will need to be flexible in your approach to the working day and environment as this varied post supports a diverse range of individuals, is locatedon one of the University’s satellite sites and entails regular evening and weekend working. A full UK driving licence would be advantageous to enable travel between AUB sites and venues
