Overview

The Health Care Support Worker will work as part of the Canadian Wing team with the supervision of registered practitioners to provide safe and effective patient‑focused care at all times. Contribute to the development of the care environment with a positive, professional attitude, and to the maintenance of daily service and care to meet the individual needs of patients and the department. The role supports the smooth running of the ward and ensures patients, relatives and carers are supported in a friendly and efficient manner, while ensuring policies and guidelines are adhered to.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities


Clinical Responsibilities

* Prepare bed spaces in preparation for receiving patients.
* Assist to ensure the ward is restocked, and share responsibility for maintaining the cleaning of clinical areas.
* Assist with the admission and discharge of patients.
* Work as part of a skilled team to support the provision of an effective and safe clinical service.
* Provide a safe, effective environment of care for patients, relatives and their carers under the direction of a registered practitioner.
* Support the registered practitioner in the delivery of direct and indirect patient care.
* Undertake delegated clinical duties including record keeping, patient observations and specimen handling.
* Check sterilised equipment, ensuring related paperwork is in order and completed correctly.
* Ensure all written documentation is completed, such as patient care plans and charts.
* Use the Patient Centre system for relevant purposes.
* Assist with day‑to‑day management of clinical equipment, report problems to senior colleagues and complete necessary documentation.
* Communicate with colleagues, patients and their relatives/carers in a professional and compassionate manner, escalating concerns to the relevant practitioner immediately.
* Assist patients with activities of daily living while maintaining privacy and dignity, including undressing, chaperoning, emotional and physical support, and overcoming communication barriers.
* Ensure patients, visitors and staff are cared for or supported sensitively and professionally, respecting ethnic origin, culture, religion, disability and sexual orientation.
* Act as a positive role model for peers and support other health care support workers as required.
* Maintain professionalism at all times and respect colleagues.
* Handle queries and problems from patients and staff, both on the telephone and in person, in a positive and helpful manner and escalating as appropriate.
* Attend department meetings.
* Ensure a safe environment in the department for patients, staff and visitors, and inform the Ward Manager or Nurse in Charge of potential hazards, complying with COSHH regulations and other health and safety legislation.
* Assist in the evaluation of new equipment and resources.
* Undertake phlebotomy tasks as required upon completion of the competency.
* Use available information technology within the department.
* Support patients with meeting nutritional needs, including ordering and serving meals and assisting with feeding.
