Job Description

What if you could do the kind of work the world needs? At WSP, you can access our global scale, contribute to landmark projects and connect with the brightest minds in your field to do the best work of your life. You can embrace your curiosity in a culture that celebrates new ideas and diverse perspectives. You can experience a world of opportunity and the chance to shape a career as unique as you.

About Your Role

As a paid, full‑time, permanent employee, you will join a global community of talented engineers, scientists, and advisors. You will receive full training combined with real, on‑the‑job learning.

You will work with dynamic teams on a variety of projects across multiple sectors from day one, asking questions, looking at problems from different angles, and helping to find innovative solutions.

As an apprentice, you will help shape the communities of tomorrow, embrace change and achieve excellence.

As an Electro‑Mechanical Engineering Degree Apprentice within our Energy team in Birmingham, you will work alongside experts to support multi‑disciplinary services that deliver a net‑zero future. You will work on projects supporting the full range of power‑generating assets, from conventional generation essential for base and peaking capacity to renewable assets such as wind and solar.

The Apprenticeship

You will start your Degree Apprenticeship in September 2026, attending the University of Nottingham for block placement, and working towards a full undergraduate degree in Electro‑Mechanical Engineering. You will also have the opportunity to become registered with a relevant professional institution.

The apprenticeship supports career growth through blended learning, offering business and role‑specific training, networking, mentoring, and practical experience. It includes an induction, training days, online content, on‑the‑job learning, and digital resources.

In partnership with the Early Careers team, a dedicated buddy and your manager will work closely with you throughout your apprenticeship to plan a development pathway that suits your goals.

Typically, the Degree Apprenticeship takes between 5 and 6 years to complete, including the End Point Assessment required in England.

We also offer a Professional Growth Network (PGN)—a networking group run by early‑career professionals for ECPs—to help you grow your network and support you in achieving chartered status or other professional accreditations.

What We Will Be Looking For You To Demonstrate

* 5 GCSEs Grade C/Level 5 or above (or equivalent) including English, Maths and Science.
* Achieved or predicted A Level grades BBB (or equivalent), including Maths at A Level.
* OR achieved or predicted a BTEC Extended Diploma (Level 3) with grades DDM in an engineering‑related subject, including a further Maths component.

Application Process

Apply Online: You do not need to submit a CV; simply complete a short online application form. You will receive a confirmation email within 5 days of submission.

Online Skills Enablers Assessment: If you meet the entry requirements and we have an apprenticeship that matches your preferences, you will receive an online skills enablers assessment from our partner Arctic Shores. For more details, visit the Support for Candidates page on the Arctic Shores website.

Interview Day / Interview: After passing the online assessment, if we have a suitable apprenticeship, you may be shortlisted for an interview day or interview. Please note that not everyone who passes the online assessment will proceed to the interview stage.

While we aim to keep you informed, we cannot respond to individual status update requests due to high application volume. We reserve the right to close vacancies ahead of the advertised deadline, so we recommend applying as soon as you are ready.

Equal Opportunity Statement

Here at WSP we positively encourage applications from suitably qualified and eligible candidates regardless of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief, marital status, pregnancy or maternity/paternity. As a Disability Confident leader, we will interview all disabled applicants who meet the essential criteria; please let us know if you require any workplace adjustments to support your application.
