DSTG is a national leader in providing trusted scientific advice and innovative solutions, playing a critical role in shaping Defence capabilities. One of its key focus areas is supporting the Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) Enterprise—a top national priority, second only to the nuclear submarine program.
At its Edinburgh, South Australia site, DSTG leads and manages advanced research and development (R&D) in explosive ordnance and energetic materials, including explosive testing, materials processing, mechanical characterisation, and safety research. The work is carried out by highly skilled scientists, engineers, and technical experts committed to safeguarding Australia’s future through science.
THE ROLE
We are currently seeking Laboratory Technicians to support DSTG’s research and development in explosive ordnance and energetic materials. These roles will involve hands-on work in laboratories and testing facilities, contributing to the preparation, processing, and characterisation of explosive materials. These positions offer a rare opportunity to contribute to nationally significant defence projects within a highly specialised and secure environment. This is an initial contract until June 2027, with two 12-month extension periods, working 5 days a week, full-time hours. Contact us to discuss the hourly rate available for this role.
Duties & Responsibilities
General Duties
Support the processing and testing of energetic materials and explosive ordnance
Maintain laboratory and test equipment, consumables, and facilities
Troubleshoot technical issues with instrumentation
Assist in preparing safety documentation and SOPs
Process and interpret test data and contribute to technical reports
Prepare, mix and cast inert and energetic ingredients
Conduct mechanical and performance testing of energetic materials
Use techniques such as spectroscopy, chromatography, and thermal analysis
Undertake sensitiveness testing (impact, friction, electrostatic discharge, ignition temperature)
SELECTION CRITERIA
Hands-on experience in materials testing, processing, or laboratory analysis
Strong understanding of WHS principles, especially with hazardous materials
Ability to follow detailed technical procedures and safety protocols
Clear and accurate reporting and communication skills
Experience with energetic materials is desirable, but not essential
Tertiary qualifications in Science or Engineering are preferred
Australian Citizenship is essential for this opportunity.
