The Opportunity
We have a permanent Structural Engineer opportunity to join the Amey Consulting team in Scotland. Our design hubs are in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Motherwell, Perth and Aberdeen, with additional office space in Dumfries, Ayr, Dundee, Nairn and Huntly. Our Amey Consulting Structures Team designs some of the largest civil engineering and related infrastructure projects across the UK.
Amey delivers local, national and international infrastructure projects for clients including Transport Scotland, Network Rail, National Highways, Local Authorities and Contractors. We have secured multiple long-term contracts and continue to grow and expand into new regions and markets.

* £240m Avonmouth and Severn Bridges SBIM contract
* Midlands Highway Alliance Plus consultancy framework

The role
As an Assistant Structural/Bridge Engineer, you will play an important part in every stage of a project from inception to completion. You will provide effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on highway structures schemes, while taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior designers. Responsibilities include:
* Work in a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions
* Preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation to satisfy quality, cost and programme criteria
* Work within a locally based technical team and take responsibility for the delivery of activities within a scheme project and team portfolio
* Contribute to the preparation of bids and general work-winning functions
* Support effective health and safety practices within the team
* Experience with sustainability practices in engineering
* Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
What you will bring to us
* Successful completion of a Degree Apprenticeship programme or employer-led early careers development programme, with progress towards Incorporated or Chartered status
* Knowledge of structures design processes and procedures relevant to the civil engineering discipline
* Ability to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with relevant technical standards and client requirements, with limited supervision and potential to oversee junior staff
* Experience with health, safety and welfare procedures, e.g. Amey’s Integrated Management System and CDM Regulations
* Understanding of technical and specification processes and ownership of deliverables with appropriate supervision
* Good competence with relevant software and analytical tools
* Basic understanding of CDM and risk assessment, and ability to manage hazards and risks on projects
* Demonstrates understanding of project interfaces
* Bachelors or Masters degree in an appropriate subject
Key responsibilities
* Take ownership and support management and technical delivery of projects from start to finish
* Prepare designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of scheme deliverables
* Support and guide more junior staff and pursue professional development
* Coordinate with client and supplier representatives, attend progress meetings, and respond to queries
* Work within a locally based technical team and deliver activities within a scheme project and team portfolio
* Contribute to bids and work-winning activities
* Drive effective Health and Safety practices within the team
* Experience with sustainability practices in engineering
* Good project management skills for multi-discipline infrastructure projects
* Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
What you will bring to us
* Team player who asks questions and develops innovative engineering solutions tailored to project scope
* Experience within the structures field, likely in an Assistant Engineer role
* Ability to deliver technically sound solutions in line with standards (DMRB, Eurocodes, CIRIA, etc.)
* Ownership of deliverables and ability to check deliverables to a reasonable standard
* Good working knowledge of relevant software and analytical tools (e.g., LUSAS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design)
* Commercial awareness and understands CDM and risk assessment applied to design and construction
* Understanding of interface management and alignment with other disciplines
* Progress toward Incorporated or Chartered status with the ICE or IStructE, or equivalent
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning
