Main duties and responsibilities
* Chair-side assistance for the dentist; speed and accuracy during procedures with attention to patient safety.
* Prepare filling/impression materials and anticipate clinician and patient requirements.
* Observe and support the patient during treatment; chaperone the dentist and be prepared to act as a witness.
* Follow Trust/local infection control procedures to ensure high standards of patient safety.
* Maintain knowledge of health and safety issues (e.g., COSHH, RIDDOR, sharps).
* Assist the dentist during x-rays and participate in quality assurance.
* Advise patients on oral hygiene as directed; follow medicine management procedures.
Planning and organisation
* Ensure efficient day-to-day running of the surgery with dexterity and accuracy in material preparation and handling of instruments.
* Anticipate clinicians and patient needs; manage changes in planned treatment and emergencies promptly.
* Maintain stock levels and know dental equipment, including sterilisation procedures (HTM01-05).
* Provide administrative and nursing support for epidemiology surveys; undertake extended duties within scope of practice; provide reception/administrative duties when required.
* Interpret patient and clinician needs to enable prompt and efficient care; manage day surgery general anaesthetic lists, liaise with staff, and assist the dentist.
* Maintain patient confidentiality and support internal and external communications to raise awareness of services.
Communication and governance
* Liaise with patients, carers, healthcare professionals, laboratories, and other departments; communicate with external organisations as required.
* Proactively collect patient feedback and maintain confidentiality.
* Contribute to internal and external communication strategies and adhere to Trust/local policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Essential
* National Certificate for Dental Nurses or equivalent.
* GCSE English and Maths level C/4 or above.
* Registered with the General Dental Council (GDC).
Desirable
* Qualification in Radiography.
* Qualification in Dental Sedation.
Knowledge & Skills
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to prioritise and coordinate own work; flexible team player.
* Advanced keyboard skills and IT proficiency (Word, Excel, Dentally Clinical System).
Other information
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is required. UK registration with the relevant professional body (GDC/UK registration) is required. The post may include safeguarding responsibilities in line with policy.
