About the apprenticeship

Duties

• Provide technical support to internal and external customers, diagnosing and resolving hardware, software, network, and system-related issues in line with service level agreements.
• Assist in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of IT projects, supporting documentation, testing and deployment activities.
• Support the maintenance, administration and security of IT infrastructure, including networks, servers, telecommunications systems and cloud-based environments.
• Contribute to cyber security activities such as system monitoring, vulnerability identification, patch management and compliance with security best practices.
• Collaborate with team members to develop, test and implement IT solutions, including supporting database, website and software application development tasks.
• Complete 20% off-the-job learning in line with the Level 4 Digital Infrastructure Engineer Apprenticeship, applying new knowledge and skills within the workplace and working towards successful programme completion.

Additional information

This is a 24-month fixed-term Apprenticeship starting in September 2026, leading to the Level 4 Digital Infrastructure Engineer qualification. Apprentices will spend 20% of their contracted hours undertaking off-the-job training through a combination of classroom or virtual learning, online study and structured development activities.
The role offers hands-on experience within a professional IT environment, working alongside experienced engineers and gaining exposure to IT operations, cyber security, telecommunications, and project delivery. Apprentices will receive structured mentoring and support from both their manager and training provider to ensure successful progression.
Applicants must meet Welsh funding eligibility requirements, including residency and right-to-work criteria, and must not already hold a qualification in a similar subject at the same or higher level.

Qualifications

To be eligible for this Apprenticeship, candidates must:
•Be aged 18 or over before the programme start date (September 2026).
•Have the right to live and work in Wales for the full duration of the programme.
•Have lived in the UK or European Economic Area (EEA) for the last three years.
•Be resident in Wales for the full duration of the Apprenticeship.
•Not be enrolled on a UK government-funded course ending August 2026 or later.
•Hold a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C/4 or above, including Maths and English.
Candidates with qualifications obtained outside the UK must obtain a Statement of Comparability from UK ENIC to confirm eligibility.
Applicants must not already hold a qualification in a similar subject at the same or higher level than this Level 4 Apprenticeship, in line with funding requirements.
This programme is suitable for individuals with little or some prior knowledge of IT and digital infrastructure.

Strong communication skills are important, including the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. The Apprentice should be comfortable collaborating within a team environment and contributing ideas to improve processes and solutions.
Resilience and adaptability are key qualities, as technology environments evolve rapidly. We value individuals who show drive, initiative and enthusiasm for developing their technical capability in areas such as IT infrastructure, networking, cyber security and systems administration.
A commitment to completing the Apprenticeship qualification and balancing workplace responsibilities with academic study is essential.
