The Safety Engineer is to lead the provision of support in meeting company and national standards across all operational Calor sites, including five Terminals and Depots, and three cylinder filling/refurbishment plants across the island of Ireland. Three sites are top tier COMAH sites with safe storage of bulk LPG on sites with storage vessels and associated pipework including cylinder and bulk filling. Ensuring compliance procedures and processes are in place and documented.

Responsibilities


* Actively engage with on-site teams to review and verify safe systems of work, ensuring their effective implementation and addressing gaps in real-time. Regularly conduct on-site audits to evaluate the adherence to work instructions and procedures, directly supporting updates and training as needed
* Collaborate with operators and engineers on-site to create, update, and embed work instructions and procedures that align with statutory and corporate standards, ensuring practical applicability. Lead hands-on workshops to identify and close gaps with a structed, action-oriented plan
* Lead the on-site implementation and compliance monitoring of the ODPS safety standard by conducting regular evaluations, organising training sessions, and addressing non-conformances in partnership with operational staff
* Work alongside the QHSE department by conducting site visits, coordinating documentation reviews, and providing technical support for COMAH (and sub-COMAH) regulations. Facilitate on-site inspections and ensure timely and accurate updates to safety cases and significant modifications
* Prepare and deliver detailed, actionable quarterly updates to QHSE for submission, ensuring clear communication of progress and challenges
* Present progress updates on ODPS elements in a practical context during quarterly Operations QHSE meetings and Quarterly ODPS Catchup meetings with the CEO, ensuring insights are derived from field and on-site activities
* Partner closely with Plant/Depot Managers and Coordinators by conducting on-site assessments to support the close out of safety and compliance actions through direct involvement and follow-up
* Act as a technical resource during pre, during and post inspection audits, working hands-on with Plant/Depot Managers and Coordinators to demonstrate ODPS compliance, prepare sites for inspections, and implement immediate remediation actions where required
* Provide field level safety input on design, specifications, and installation activities for engineering projects and process changes, ensuring compliance from concept to completion
* Actively participate in and guide the Management of Change and Human Factors Engineering processes by working with project teams to evaluate safety implications and ensure all documentation is updated to reflect operational realities
* Join safety audits and statutory inspections on Calor sites as an active participant, identifying and addressing safety issues on the ground and ensuring compliance
* Take a lead role in managing and tracking remediation actions by collaborating with sites teams to identify root causes, propose solutions, and oversee their practical implementation


Scale of role:

Responsible for safety and compliance tasks of Upper Tier COMAH sites, lower tier COMAH sites within National Infrastructure plant including production locations of Pressure Test Services, and Whitegate and Belfast Filling Plants with safe storge of bulk LPG on sites with storage vessels, associated pipework including cylinder and bulk filling.

Level of Decision Making required:

Safety - Make proactive and reactive decisions on safety audit and inspection findings. Prioritise work based on risk assessment. Understand when to refer to higher levels.

Support team and colleagues on day-to-day decision making related to project and maintenance and performance.

Stakeholder management:

Develop strong working relationships with key stakeholders ensuring collaboration in the drive for compliance and safety matters throughout the function to meet the needs of the business and the company's objectives.

Communicate clearly and concisely with all stakeholders. Ensure content and detail is appropriate to enable them and you to make informed decisions based on the appropriate, accurate and prompt sharing of information. Manage the delivery of actions derived from compliance issues and audits in an efficient and within agreed timescale with QHSE and colleagues.

Requirements

* A third level degree ideally in mechanical engineering, project management, construction, process safety, or equivalent with a view to chartership
* Ideally Competent Engineer with a minimum 3 years' experience in the areas of technical management
* Ability to communicate with individuals of all levels
* Ability to develop and nurture relationships across a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
* Results driven and focused hands-on individual with demonstrated capability to manage a range of tasks
* Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a cross functional team
* Demonstrate a strategic approach to achieve business objectives
* Experience in the storage and handling of LPG or energy industry would be advantageous
* A full Clean EU/UK driving licence as all island travel is an essential
