Advanced Biomedical Scientist - Cellular Pathology
We are seeking a driven and experienced Advanced Biomedical Scientist to join the Cellular Pathology Department at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This senior BMS role sits within a busy, highly specialised diagnostic service and involves leading and coordinating a defined section of the laboratory, ensuring the smooth delivery of complex technical workflows that support safe, timely and high‑quality patient care. The post is mainly based in St James Hospital and plays an important role within the Trust’s wider Pathology service.
Main duties of the job
* Lead and coordinate the cellular pathology section, managing competing priorities and working both autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary service.
* Ensure compliance with UKAS accreditation, audit, EQA, validation and risk‑management processes.
* Oversee the implementation of complex technical investigations requiring specialist analytical skills.
* Lead continuous service improvement and up‑skill staff, contributing to training, competency assessment and professional development.
* Work within a six‑day service (7.30 am–7.30 pm) and be available for all Saturdays.
* Collaborate with other laboratory specialities and external partners to deliver quality patient care.
What you will bring to the role
* HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist with extensive postregistration experience in Cellular Pathology.
* Relevant MSc, Higher Specialist Diploma or equivalent Level 7 qualification (or equivalent Level 7 experience).
* Experience of leading and coordinating technical activities within a specialist laboratory section.
* Ability to undertake highly specialist clinical technical investigations requiring complex analysis and interpretation.
* Experience of validating and authorising technical work to professional and regulatory standards.
* Commitment to staff training, development and competency assessment.
* Experience in quality activities such as UKAS accreditation, audit, EQA, validation and risk management.
* Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey complex or sensitive information effectively.
* Ability to deputise for senior staff and contribute to departmental management activities.
* A proactive approach to service improvement and maintaining high standards of patient care.
Qualifications
* HCPC Registered healthcare scientist.
Experience
* Extensive experience within this or a related discipline.
* Evidence of leadership.
* Evidence of ongoing training within the discipline.
* Participation in CPD schemes.
* Willingness to undertake other formal study and in‑house training.
* Attendance at relevant and recent training courses.
* Awareness of people governance policies.
