Build Something Meaningful: Lead the Development of a Web-Based Digital Pathology Viewer
Are you passionate about creating intuitive, high-performance web applications in healthcare and life sciences?
Do you enjoy working on tightly scoped, impactful projects that need a balance of innovation, compliance, and precision?
Would you be excited to shape a mission-critical platform that supports pathologists and researchers working on clinical trials?
Then this is the project for you.
What’s Involved
Our client is seeking experienced consultants, development firms, or technical contractors who can design and deliver a web-based digital pathology viewer. This solution will be hosted in AWS, meet FDA 510(k) regulatory standards, and integrate seamlessly into existing clinical trial web systems.
This isn't a speculative build-this is a real-world, regulatory-grade platform that needs to be performant, secure, and compliant from day one.
Why This Role is Great
* Own a Greenfield Build: Shape the architecture and design of a critical medical device viewer from the ground up.
* Deliver an Embedded Experience: Create a highly embeddable, framework-agnostic component for seamless integration.
* Balance Innovation with Compliance: Build a modern interface that meets strict regulatory demands (HIPAA, GDPR, 21 CFR Part 11).
* Enhance Research Impact: Support life sciences professionals reviewing pathology slides in cutting-edge clinical trials.
* Control Your Stack: Direct communication with backend services, AWS-native hosting, and a component-first development approach.
The Tech Environment
This is a browser-based solution hosted in AWS. You’ll be working with:
* Modern Browsers: Compatibility with Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge
* Responsive Design: Optimised for desktop with high-resolution image handling
* Web Components or JavaScript Library: For embedding within existing applications (open to your technical guidance)
* Direct S3 Integration: Viewer to access and annotate pathology slides stored in S3 buckets
Performance matters here: slide load times <3 seconds, and smooth zoom/pan interactions are essential for pathologist productivity.
Key Functional Highlights
* Fast, intuitive image navigation (zoom, pan, enhancement tools)
* Support for various WSI formats: .svs, .ndpi, .tiff, DICOM
* Annotation tools: freehand, shapes, text, private notes
* Measurement and calibration tools
* Secure audit trail logging and user context awareness (no separate auth layer—context passed from host app)
About You (or Your Team)
You’ll bring:
* A strong portfolio of similar embedded healthcare or image-based viewers (bonus if you’ve worked on FDA-cleared software)
* Experience delivering single-page or modular applications within regulated environments
* A deep understanding of efficient tile-based rendering for large images
* A collaborative mindset, able to liaise with product and clinical teams while maintaining autonomy over delivery
Whether you're a small agency, a freelance team, or an independent contractor, we want to hear from you.
