Job overview
The Preoperative Assessment Department at the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) manages clinics for the elective surgical patient and for multiple specialities. You will be based in the PRH.
This is a highly skilled role which is dynamic and nurse-led. The staff nurses' role is to provide high-quality care through a comprehensive, individualised assessment of the elective surgical patient.
Main duties of the job
* Organising and participating in the delivery of high standards of evidence-based nursing care.
* Taking responsibility to carry out required planned, direct patient care to a high standard without direct supervision.
* Contributing towards the health promotion for all patients by providing education, support and advice.
* In the absence of senior staff, taking responsibility for the delegation and supervision of appropriate work.
* Taking personal responsibility for treating all patients with courtesy and maintaining confidentiality.
* Ensuring provision of a safe and therapeutic environment for all patients, relatives, visitors and colleagues.

* Assess patients' suitability and fitness for surgery and anaesthesia using agreed protocols.
* Conduct assessment of both the medical and psychological status of elective surgical patients.
* Order and perform diagnostic tests within set protocols.
* Provide information about the pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative process.
* Communicate effectively and liaise with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
Person specification
Skills
* Previous experience of working within preoperative assessment.
* NMC fully registered.
* Personable.
* Familiar with IT systems used by the Trust.
* ECG and venepuncture skills.
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
