The role blends strategic leadership and team development while remaining grounded in daily operations managing your team responsible for all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) functions at A&P Tyne, reporting regularly to senior management on key safety KPIs and environmental performance You'll be overseeing compliance with ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) standards, across operations such as cleaning, blasting, painting, tank cleaning, insulation, hot work, heavy steel fabrication, dry docks, panel lines, and subcontractors within the facility This role is critical to ensuring a safe, legally compliant, and environmentally responsible working environment across a multi-disciplinary site with heavy machinery, hazardous materials, water safety risks, and high-risk fabrication and maintenance operations. You'll manage / oversee / undertake risk assessments and hazard identification for all operational activities including hot work, confined spaces, and work at height. Oversee HSE procedures for cleaning, blasting, painting, tank cleaning, insulation, and fabrication activities as well as ensure water safety protocols are in place and maintained, particularly around dry docks and wet environments Monitor and enforce safe systems of work for operation of heavy machinery and mobile plant. Ensure permit-to-work systems are effectively implemented, particularly for hot work and confined space entry Manage the performance and compliance of subcontractors working on site Coordinate environmental and safety audits, inspections, and emergency drills as well as maintain and develop site-wide safety culture through training, toolbox talks, and engagement Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and implement corrective / preventive actions You'll work with relevant authorities, certification bodies, and external stakeholders when needed And what are we looking for? NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent in Occupational Health and Safety. Experience in a similar HSE role within a heavy engineering, marine, or industrial environment. Proven experience working with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 standards. Experience managing high-risk activities: hot work, confined space, heavy lifts, blasting, painting, and water safety. Strong knowledge of relevant HSE legislation and best practices. Experience with managing and auditing subcontractors and third-party vendors. Strong leadership, communication, and report-writing skills. Competence in incident investigation and root cause analysis methodologies (e.g., 5 Whys, Fishbone). Familiarity with environmental monitoring, waste management, and pollution control. Why join us?
