Job Summary
We are commissioning an artist, creative practitioner, arts organisation or collective with a distinctive creative approach to create an artwork for installation opposite Vue Cinema in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre. Online information session on Thursday 5th February 2026.
Job Description
Vitally, the artwork will be inspired by Redditch's artistic heritage. The Paolozzi Mosaics (1983) sit in the Kingfisher Centre and consultation conducted by Midlands Mosaics revealed residents' wishes to see artworks inspired by the mosaics created today. Respondents told us they were interested in two key themes: (1) representations of technology and the natural world and (2) colourful and vibrant design. The successful artist, creative practitioner, arts organization or collective will take these themes and reimagine them in a new way. Given the proximity to Vue Cinema, we are also interested in designs that reflect Paolozzi's preoccupation with film and popular media. Over an 18 month period, local consultation about the Mosaics informed and shaped the themes for this brief, ensuring the themes are relevant to people in Redditch. The artwork will cover 3 panels and may reflect 3 distinct ideas relevant to the themes or tell a cohesive story about Paolozzi's mosaics. We are therefore interested in hearing from a broad range of practitioners to deliver this commission that could include but are not limited to: Street artists, Mural artists, Designers, Visual artists.
We are keen for the artwork to reflect three key aims of the project:
* Reimagine the physical space outside of Vue Cinema, Kingfisher Centre
* Incorporate and reimagine the Paolozzi Mosaics
* Deliver a distinctive installation for Redditch people to be proud of.
* The final artwork will be inclusive of and reflect the diversity of local communities and/or environments.
The final artwork must result in something special, relevant to Redditch and the brief, and be distinctive, like Paolozzi's mosaics.
The fee is £8,000 (includes VAT) inclusive of design, creation, all materials, and any equipment needed. A separate budget of £1,000 for installation costs, is to be spent in partnership.
Full details of the brief and commissioning process can be found on our website link below.
Job Requirements
The proposed site of the artwork comprises three panels of 2580mm x 5210mm (panels slightly vary in size but do not exceed these dimensions), as well as a fourth panel that we envisage will take the form of an interpretation panel.
The commissioned artist or collective will work with the delivery team to shape this panel, including relevant acknowledgements. The space allows for the artwork to be designed and fixed onto the wall or to be painted onto the design, so the space allows for a variety of visual artistic approaches. Installation will need to be approved with the Kingfisher's Health and Safety team depending on the design.
The artwork must stay within the designated boundaries, must not include any political narrative, and must be reflective of the themes outlined in the brief.
Job Responsibilities
The commissioned artist(s) will need to transport the artwork to the site. Reimagine Redditch and Kingfisher will support installation costs. The final artwork will need to consider any Health and Safety considerations and will need to be durable and low maintenance. The artist(s) will need to work closely with Reimagine Redditch's and the Kingfisher Shopping Centre's teams to ensure the correct installation standards are observed. Please note, we expect the successful artist, creative practitioner or arts organisation or collective to provide a method statement and risk assessment before starting work and plans must comply with the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations, 1999.
