Overview
We have an exciting opportunity for a band 5 or band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to join our team. The Adult Learning Disability (LD) Service covers Derby City and South Derbyshire geographical area. This post will include community visits, working from home and from a base. We are a small, friendly and supportive team of Speech and Language Therapists who keep in regular contact with each other. We are allied with North Derbyshire, providing access to a wider team of speech and language therapists who can offer support.
As a member of the team you will have access to regular caseload and clinical supervision, plus an annual appraisal to support you to plan and achieve goals from your own Personal Development Plan. There are opportunities to explore different specialist areas within the LD team and continue your professional development by shadowing others and attending training courses or clinical excellence networks.
Our approach is person-centred. We focus on providing high-quality assessment and intervention to support people (and those closest to them) to communicate as effectively as possible.
You will be working as part of a Multidisciplinary Team alongside Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Therapy Assistants and Psychiatrists. You will have your own caseload to prioritise and will be involved in the supervision of our band 5s and assistants if you are employed as a band 6. Your role will also include involvement in service projects and improvements.
The successful candidate should be able to work well independently and as part of a team. Knowledge and skills in learning disabilities is advantageous. You will need to have means of transport to cover the different community localities in Derby city and South Derbyshire area.
As a clinical employee it will be your responsibility to ensure that your behaviour and values reflect those set out in the DHcFT way.
Responsibilities
* Manage and prioritise your own caseload within a community LD service.
* Provide high-quality assessment and intervention to people with learning disabilities to support communication.
* Work as part of a Multidisciplinary Team and collaborate with colleagues across professions.
* Offer supervision to Band 5s and assistants when applicable (Band 6 role).
* Engage in service projects and improvements; contribute to continuous service development.
* Engage in regular caseload reviews, clinical supervision, and annual appraisal planning from your Personal Development Plan.
* Explore specialist areas within the LD team and pursue professional development through shadowing and training courses.
Qualifications and Requirements
* Band 5 or Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist.
* Knowledge and skills in learning disabilities are advantageous.
* Must have means of transport to cover different community localities in Derby city and South Derbyshire.
* Computer literate and able to use IT systems daily.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Working Conditions and Other Considerations
* Due to the broad geographical area, a car driver or the ability to travel within the area frequently is required; transporting service users as needed, occasionally, without compromising service needs.
* Work in community settings and personal environments; be aware of hazards in homes.
* Occasional exposure to distressing circumstances; safeguarding responsibilities; potential aggression from service users.
* May encounter contact with bodily fluids, odours, dust, and dirt.
* Emotional and mental effort due to unpredictability of patient needs and potential crises; preparation of complex funding applications and specialist reports.
* May be required to provide evidence in safeguarding situations or as a witness.
