Job Description
We’re seeking an experienced Systems Design Engineer to join a major UK-based nuclear infrastructure programme. This role focuses on the end-to-end development of complex communication and information systems used in a regulated, safety-critical environment. You’ll work across multidisciplinary teams and contribute to the safe, secure and scalable design of next-generation infrastructure.
Responsibilities
* Collaborate with lead system architects and technical teams to capture and validate system requirements.
* Engage with stakeholders including IT, EC&I, and other engineering teams to ensure alignment and compliance.
* Design and document a range of communication and information systems including Main Telephone System, Radio and Mobile Communication Systems, Public Address and Clock Systems, Site Incident and Electronic Notification Systems, and IT/Data Network Systems (LAN/WAN, VoIP, Security, Wired/Wireless infrastructure).
* Develop detailed design documentation such as Functional Specifications, High-Level Designs, Risk and Assumption Logs.
* Ensure all outputs meet relevant safety and regulatory requirements, including IAEA SSG-62 and internal design standards; participate in design reviews and peer workshops; provide assurance and review of supplier and internal deliverables; support planning and scheduling of deliverables aligned to programme milestones; deliver solutions that are scalable, resilient, and future-ready.
Qualifications
* Proven experience in systems design or systems engineering within complex infrastructure or regulated environments (e.g., nuclear, defence, energy, or rail).
* Strong technical understanding of communications, control systems, and IT network architectures.
* Ability to interpret and apply industry standards and safety regulations; familiarity with IAEA SSG-62 or similar safety frameworks is advantageous.
* Proficient in using requirements management tools such as IBM DOORS or equivalent.
* Skilled in producing comprehensive technical documents including design specifications, functional requirements, and risk assessments.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across multi-disciplinary teams and engage stakeholders at various levels.
* Highly organised, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
* Educated to degree level in a relevant field such as Systems Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Communications, or Information Technology.
