The Opportunity
We are pleased to offer an excellent opportunity for a Maintenance Electrician to join the on‑site facilities team at HMP Onley.
This role supports the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of electrical systems within a secure prison environment on behalf of His Majesty's Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS). A weekend rota is in place (1 in 3 weekends), with an additional allowance payable for weekend working.
The Role
As a Maintenance Electrician, you will be responsible for delivering high‑quality electrical maintenance across the site, helping to ensure a safe and well‑maintained environment for staff and residents.
Key responsibilities include:
* Planned and preventative electrical maintenance, including associated administrative tasks
* Fault finding and problem solving on a range of electrical systems
* Like‑for‑like replacements and minor electrical works
* Carrying out electrical inspections and testing in accordance with BS7671, with accurate recording of results
* Ensuring all electrical systems remain safe, compliant, and fully operational
* Supporting the Responsible Person and Authorised Person when required
* Ensuring Health & Safety standards, risk assessments, and safe systems of work are consistently followed
* Assisting with escorting duties and other site‑related tasks as required
About You
Essential requirements:
* City & Guilds 2367 or 2357 Level 2 Electrical Installation (or equivalent)
* BS7671 18th Edition (17th Edition considered with upskilling available)
* Strong understanding of Health & Safety requirements
* Experience in planned and preventative maintenance
* Good organisational and time management skills
* Ability to work independently and use initiative
* Experience working to tight deadlines
* Comfortable working at heights
* Knowledge of Electrical Systems and Electricity at Work Regulations
* Basic IT skills
Desirable:
* Experience with fire alarm and CCTV systems
Security Clearance
This position is subject to Prison Security Clearance. Full support will be provided throughout the clearance process.
