Attendance Adviser (Virtual School) – Warwickshire Attendance Service

37 hours per week – Full Time, All Year Round – 2-Year Temporary Contract

Salary Grade J (SCP 20 – 23)

About the Team

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Warwickshire Attendance Service, supporting the Virtual School. You’ll be part of a friendly, established team working in line with the statutory guidance Working together to improve school attendance (2024) and Promoting the education of looked-after children and previously looked after children, as well as the extended duties of the Virtual School Head for children with a social worker and those in kinship care arrangements. This role is central to ensuring that children in these cohorts receive the support they need to access education and improve attendance outcomes.

About the Role

As an Attendance Adviser (Virtual School), you will:

1. Deliver the four core local authority functions from Working together to improve school attendance (2024).
2. Analyse attendance data for Virtual School cohorts, to identify children who are persistently or severely absent or at risk of becoming so.
3. Support and advise on the development of individual support plans with schools, social workers, carers, and other professionals to remove barriers to attendance.
4. Attend Targeting Support Meetings when required and contribute to multi-agency planning and intervention.
5. Provide strategic advice and guidance to schools and multi-agency partners, including on whole school attendance strategies, coding, policy and systems.
6. Use a support-first approach to improve outcomes for children and young people, particularly those in care, previously looked-after, or with a social worker.
7. Escalate cases through formal legal processes where necessary, including Attendance Contracts, Parenting Orders, and Education Supervision Orders.
8. Maintain high-quality case records and contribute to service development.
9. Report regularly to the Virtual School Head and work with a high degree of independence as a representative of the local authority.


Full induction and training will be provided along with ongoing continuous professional development.

Key Requirements

We are seeking someone who:

10. Has experience of supporting children and families in education, social care or multi-agency settings.
11. Understands the challenges faced by children experiencing trauma, mental health issues, SEND, or the cost of living crisis.
12. Can manage a caseload effectively, maintain accurate records, and meet deadlines.
13. Has experience in analysing attendance data.
14. Is committed to safeguarding, equality, and continuous professional development.

We work in line with WCC agile working, and a large part of the role is independent working. The successful applicant will be delivering support across the local authority; therefore, you must be prepared and able to travel. The office base is Shire Hall, Warwick.
