Summary of the role
The University of Exeter wishes to recruit a full-time BSU Manager /Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer (NACWO) to work as a part of the University’s Biological Research Facilities within Technical Services. This post is available on the Streatham Campus immediately on a permanent basis.
A critical member of the BSU team, the post holder will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day management of one or more of the University’s BSU facilities, within the Biological Research Facilities (BRF) team. They will manage the facility(s), both in terms of maintaining animal husbandry and supporting the operational needs of research projects, as well as the operational needs of a busy facility. The role holder will take responsibility for operational management, training, health and safety, facility maintenance, biosecurity, and security of their facility(s). They will work collaboratively with technical and professional services staff, stakeholders, and suppliers to maintain operations and a culture of care within the facility.
The post holder should have a working knowledge of rodent housing systems, equipment, BSU infrastructure, and biosecurity. They must be a competent PIL operative to support research activities, including conducting competency assessments of PIL Holders and Animal Technicians with the NTCO.
The role holder will also serve as the Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer (NACWO), ensuring compliance with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 and maintaining high standards of animal welfare in accordance with Home Office licence conditions and University policies.
