Labour Ward Coordinator

This advert is only open to applicants who are currentlyemployed by County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust.

This is an exciting opportunity for driven and motivatedmidwives to develop themselves and their skills and become a part of our LabourWard Coordinators Team in a development fixed term role. You would be basedwithin an Acute setting, across Labour Ward, with responsibility for staff onthe Pregnancy Assessment Unit and Postnatal Ward areas on an out of hoursbasis. We have excellent facilities on each of our acute sites, with both lowand high risk areas for birthing persons.

As a Labour Ward Co-ordinator on arrival intoour organisation you will benefit from a supernumerary period, and following onfrom interview you would be provided with contact and support from the team.You will be supported and welcomed into your role and given the opportunity tocontinue to develop your midwifery skills and leadership through our CPDprogrammes and the national Labour Ward coordinators framework. We are keen todevelop highly trained midwives who can deliver exceptional care to thefamilies of County Durham and Darlington. Main duties of the job

We are looking for experienced midwives who are committed toproviding safe shift provision in a busy Labour ward setting, takingresponsibility for the coordination of patient care within our departments andacting upon, and escalating concerns in a timely manner. We will take intoconsideration your skills and knowledge and develop a plan with you to supportyour transition into your new role. Safety of women and babies is paramount,and so we are looking for highly skilled, professional and autonomous midwivesto join our teams.

The post holder will carry shift leader responsibilities,this will include maintaining oversight of activity, acuity, allocation ofworkload and skill mix on the maternityunit. The post holder will be able to deal with unpredictable highlevels of clinical activity to include assessment, planning, implementation andevaluation of midwifery care in a safe environment.

The role will involve actively participatingwithin escalation across the trust during heightened levels of increasedactivity, liaising directly with colleagues to maintain safety within bothunits of CDDFT.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job responsibilities

Our maternity teams are growing and changing and we areexcited to look for new leaders to join our already well established teams. Weare certain this is a role you will enjoy at CDDFT Maternity.

The post holder will be responsible for the smooth and saferunning of the labour ward and will take overall charge of the ante/postnatalward and pregnancy assessment unit out of hours. The postholder will act as acredible support for other members of the maternity team to practice safely. Thepost holder will be supported to work in in line with the nationally recognisedLabour Ward Coordinators development and educational framework.

We have an excellentteam of specialist midwives, ward managers and a senior leadership team who arecommited to safety, quality and service improvement whom you will have a closeworking relationship with.

The post holder will have some responsibility for a group ofmidwives and maternity support workers for appraisal and development. They willalso be involved in the development of services, quality improvement, dealingwith complaints and engaging in multidisciplinary team working working across theorganisation.


Person Specification


Experience

* High level of clinical expertise and sound knowledge of all birthing environments using an evidence based approach.
* Knowledge of current issues and initiatives in public health, antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care
* Able to manage sensitive or difficult situations effectively
* IT skills including Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
* Well developed communication skills including the ability to communicate calmly, clearly and kindly whilst building and maintaining trusted and respectful relationships with all colleagues across the MDT
* Able to lead with confidence and act with compassion for service users and all members of a team ensuring a culture of inclusivity and psychological safety.
* Ability to work on own initiative and take ownership of problems.
* Excellent organisational and time management skills.
* Committed to professional and personal development supported by reflective practice
* Experience of linking with outside agencies and stakeholders.
* Quality Improvement activity


Special Skills & Knowledge

* Ability to provide written and verbal reports.
* Ability to travel across site as required


Qualifications

* Degree/diploma relevant to speciality
* Registered Midwife with current UK NMC PIN
* Significant experience within an acute maternity setting at Band 6
* Evidence of relevant ongoing professional development
* Recognised teaching /assessing qualification
* Post graduate certificate or Masters in health related, management or leadership subject.
* Evidence of management training
* Trained NIPE practitioner


Statutory Registration

* NMC registered midwife
