Torbay is one of the National Lottery Heritage Fund's Heritage Places, a programme of sustained investment into the bay to assist in the promotion and protection of our local heritage and culture and its connection with residents and visitors to Torbay.
As our new Historic Environment Officer, you'll be central to the functioning of our Heritage and Design Team and will be working on a range of projects related to the management of our local historic environment.
What you'll be doing:
* Providing accurate and up to date guidance on heritage related matters including the HARR, local lists and Conservation Appraisals and Management Plans.
* Ensuring that development plan policies and guidance are prepared with due consideration to heritage matters.
* Ensuring relevant planning and listed building consent applications are determined with the proper consideration of heritage issues and with the appropriate engagement at the pre application stage.
The post is for 12 month maternity cover and is fully funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund through the Torbay Heritage Place Programme.

Skills
Essential:
* Self-motivated, productive, dynamic and innovative.
* Communication and negotiation skills.
* Able to see tasks through to a successful conclusion, meeting challenging deadlines whilst maintaining attention to detail.
This role requires the ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence and fluency in English.
Knowledge
Essential:
* Thorough understanding of the wider Planning functions including Planning Policy and Development Management.
* Specialist knowledge of historic building conservation.
* Working knowledge of all relevant planning and heritage legislation and national policies and guidance.
* Understanding of wider national heritage issues and how they relate to the context of Torbay’s economic growth aspirations.
Experience & Qualifications
Essential:
* Degree or diploma in Town Planning, Landscape Architecture (CMLI), Archaeology, Building Conservation or a related discipline or significant relevant experience.
* Proven experience in advising on proposals affecting heritage assets.
* Membership or eligibility for membership of the Landscape Institute, Institute of Historic Building Conservation or equivalent body or other appropriate professional body.
* An ability to recognise and communicate about significance in the historic environment.
