Senior Archaeological Conservator (Maritime) Location: Portsmouth, UK (Hybrid) Salary: £39,590 – £41,761 per annum Contract: Permanent, Full-time About the Role Historic England, the public body caring for England’s historic environment, is seeking a Senior Archaeological Conservator (Maritime) to join its expert team. This is a unique opportunity to play a leading role in the conservation of maritime archaeological heritage, managing Historic England’s Maritime Conservation Facility and providing specialist advice across projects, partnerships, and public engagement. You will not only lead on conservation practice and heritage science research but also champion innovative approaches, share expertise nationally and internationally, and help build sector-wide capacity in maritime conservation. Key Responsibilities Expert advice & conservation practice: Provide authoritative archaeological conservation advice to Historic England, English Heritage Trust, and sector partners. Research & innovation: Develop and lead heritage science research aligned to the Historic England Corporate Plan and Research Agenda. Public engagement: Increase the visibility and impact of conservation work through events, publications, and outreach. Facility management: Oversee access, training, and external use of the Maritime Conservation Facility. Training & knowledge-sharing: Deliver training to professionals and contribute to capacity-building across the conservation sector. Collaboration: Work closely with marine specialists and cross-disciplinary teams to deliver a seamless advisory service. Candidate Profile Postgraduate qualification in conservation (or equivalent experience). Extensive experience in archaeological conservation practice, ideally in the maritime context. Skilled in the use of X-ray and/or vacuum-freeze drying equipment for cultural heritage materials. Strong knowledge of current issues affecting conservation across commercial, voluntary, and academic sectors. Confident communicator with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of partners and stakeholders. Benefits Salary: £39,590 – £41,761.
