Advanced Clinical Pharmacist - Neonates (SNICU)

Band 8a

Liverpool Women’s NHS FT became part of NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (UHLG) in November 2024, following the coming together with Liverpool University Hospitals NHS FT. UHLG was born from a shared aim to improve the care we provide to our patients.

UHLG is one of the largest employers in the region, with over 16,800 colleagues who are dedicated to caring for our communities - from birth and beyond. For the 630,000 people across Merseyside, UHLG is also their local NHS, providing general and emergency hospital care, alongside highly specialised regional services for more than two million people in the North West.

At Liverpool Women’s Hospital, each year we deliver approximately 7,500 babies, carry out around 50,000 gynaecological inpatient and outpatient procedures, care for over 1,000 poorly and premature newborns, perform around 1,000 IVF cycles, and conduct over 4,000 genetic appointments.

We believe that this, along with a strong dedication to research and innovation, makes us the specialist health provider of choice in Europe for women, babies and families.

Liverpool Women’s has an excellent reputation and is a centre of excellence. It is an exciting environment to work in and a great place to develop your career for many years to come.

Job overview

Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust (LWH) and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital are working in partnership to change and improve how neonatal services are delivered to families across the Northwest.

Improvements have already been made to the way neonatal care is being delivered, including colleagues from both hospitals working more closely together across both sites under the formation of the Liverpool Neonatal Partnership (LNP). The Neonatal Unit at Liverpool Women’s Hospital has also been recently redeveloped and a newly built Neonatal Intensive and High Dependency Care Unit opened in 2020. The next phase in the development is a new 22 cot Surgical Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (SNICU) at Alder Hey. The unit is expected to be open in 2026.

As part of the development, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and motivated pharmacist to join our neonatal pharmacy team. As post holder, you will be employed by LWH but lead the SNICU at Alder Hey as part of the LNP. This is a new role funded by the LNP to support neonatal services in Liverpool.

You will become part of the well-established multidisciplinary team and will be involved in the delivery of core pharmacy and enhanced clinical services to the surgical neonatal speciality.

If you share our commitment to provide excellent healthcare for women, babies and their families in a safe, friendly and caring environment, and share our values, then we would be delighted to hear from you.

Main duties of the job

This post holder will in the long term be the lead for the SNICU on the Alder Hey site. This role will work closely with senior colleagues within LWH and Alder Hey pharmacy departments and the Liverpool Neonatal Partnership, to deliver and develop the clinical pharmacy service.

For the initial period it will mainly involve work on the governance of setting up the LNP and the joint working on the Alder Hey site. This work will require post holder to work cross site between LWH and Alder Hey.

When the new unit opens the postholder will be responsible for the day to day organisation of the clinical pharmacy services for surgical neonates at Alder Hey; participate in the multidisciplinary ward rounds to provide an advanced clinical service; play an active role in working alongside the pharmacy team at Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust as part of collaborative working in the Liverpool Neonatal Partnership; and liaise with the relevant medical and nursing staff to promote safe, effective and cost effective use of medication in neonatology.

Although the independent trusts are working under the LNP, there must be a lead trust for overarching governance decisions. At present this has not been decided. If Alder Hey became the named lead trust, the post holder may be transferred to Alder Hey staff in the longer term. However, any changes to terms and conditions will be discussed with the post holder in advance of any changes being made.

Working for our organisation

Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust delivers the highest standards of care for women, babies and families. We believe that this along with a strong dedication to research & innovation makes us the specialist health provider of choice in Europe for women, babies and families.

We have some of the leading experts in their field, which has been showcased on national TV and news, making our teams famous across the world for professionalism, skill & compassion.

As well as developing services on our current site we have long-term aspirations for the future.
