Job Description
The Private Client Fee Earner manages a diverse caseload within the private client department, providing legal advice and assistance to individual clients on matters such as wills, probate, estates, trusts, lasting powers of attorney, and related services. The role involves direct client contact, preparation and drafting of legal documents, and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and professional standards. The post holder works closely with clients to understand their needs, delivers clear and practical advice, and supports the smooth progression of cases from inception to completion.
Key Responsibilities
Provide expert legal advice to clients on private client matters including wills, probate, estate administration, trusts, and lasting powers of attorney.
Draught, review, and execute legal documents such as wills, codicils, trusts, letters of administration, and powers of attorney.
Conduct initial client interviews, gather relevant information, and assess client requirements.
Administer estates and manage probate processes, liaising with executors, beneficiaries, and third parties.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date case files and client records in accordance with regulatory and firm policies.
Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and professional standards, including anti-money laundering regulations.
Work collaboratively with other departments as required to provide comprehensive client service.
Manage own caseload efficiently, prioritising tasks to meet deadlines and client expectations.
Keep abreast of legal developments within private client law and apply relevant changes to practise.
Required Qualifications
Qualified solicitor, licenced conveyancer, or equivalent legal qualification recognised in the United Kingdom.
Admission to the roll of solicitors or equivalent regulatory body registration.
Education
Law degree or equivalent legal qualification.
Completion of professional legal training or equivalent certification.
Experience
Minimum three years’ experience working within a private client legal department or equivalent practise.
Proven experience in drafting wills, managing probate matters, and administering estates.
Experience in dealing with trusts and powers of attorney is highly desirable.
Knowledge and Skills
Comprehensive knowledge of private client law including wills, probate, estate administration, trusts, and powers of attorney.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain complex legal matters clearly to clients.
Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to manage a varied caseload effectively.
Attention to detail and accuracy in legal drafting and document preparation.
Proficient IT skills including case management systems, document production, and general office software.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team within a busy legal environment.
Understanding of regulatory and compliance requirements affecting private client work.
Preferred Qualifications
Membership of relevant professional bodies such as the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) or equivalent.
Additional training or accreditation in specialist private client areas.
Experience of using legal case management software specific to private client work.
