The role
As a Senior Commissioning Engineer – Electrical, you’ll be at the heart of delivering critical maintenance programmes for Astute Class submarines. Your expertise will ensure that commissioning activities meet the highest standards of safety, quality, and engineering excellence. This is a role where your decisions make a real difference, safeguarding national security and supporting the Royal Navy’s operational readiness.
Day-to-day, you’ll acti as the SME to provide support and guidance to the joint project teams to support the timely delivery of the programme.
1. Coordinate and develop electrical commissioning requirements for Astute Class maintenance periods
2. Represent Babcock at meetings with the MoD and other authorities
3. Support risk management processes and maintain risk registers
4. Ensure all commissioning activities meet professional engineering standards and nuclear safety constraints
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with days in the office/onsite and days working from home.
Essential experience of the Senior Commissioning Engineer – Electrical
5. Extensive submarine commissioning experience across full maintenance projects
6. Strong knowledge of SSN submarine reactor, propulsion, and ship systems
7. Proven ability to work with submarine commissioning, production and project teams
8. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
9. Ability to adapt to changing environments and manage stakeholders effectively
Qualifications for the Senior Commissioning Engineer – Electrical
10. HNC in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
11. Nuclear Plant Foundation Course or equivalent (training will be provided if not held)
12. Nuclear Practitioner Course or equivalent (training will be provided if not held)
13. Dockyard Nuclear Systems Course or equivalent (training will be provided if not held)
14. Submarine Quality Assurance Course (training will be provided if not held)
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) / Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) / Atomic security clearance for this role.
