NHS Lanarkshire is Scotland’s third largest health board and has 3 Acute Hospitals – University Hospital Hairmyres, University Hospital Wishaw and University Hospital Monklands. All services are currently working to design and realise new models of care for the replacement University Hospital Monklands which will be Scotland’s flagship digital hospital, to be built by 2031. University Hospital Monklands is a district general hospital allowing a varied practice. It has a modern 10 bedded critical care unit housing level 3 and surgical level 2 patients. There are approximately 600 admissions per year, 55% of which are surgical. University Hospital Monklands also hosts all major ENT, head and neck, and urology cases for NHS Lanarkshire as well as general surgery, vascular access, and dental services. OMFS services for NHSL are based in University Hospital Monklands. Currently the service is undergoing reconfiguration as we move to joint working with NHS Forth Valley to provide long term resilience. Elective sessions will be provided by consultant working in both Health Boards and by specialty dentists. The hospital also houses the regional renal unit, haematology/oncology unit, and infectious diseases unit. There is a busy Emergency Department receiving adult and paediatric patients. The regional level 2 trauma centre is in University Hospital Wishaw, and the level 1 trauma unit is the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. Situated in West Central Scotland, University Hospital Monklands is readily accessed from a wide area, allowing commuting from city, suburban and rural locales.
