Position Overview
The Faculty of Advocates is the regulatory body for members of the Scottish Bar, regulating their conduct. The Faculty Complaints Committee and the Faculty Disciplinary Tribunal comprise both Members of Faculty and Lay Members appointed by the Scottish Government. A vacancy has arisen for a Lay Member and applications are invited from suitable persons interested in fulfilling this interesting and challenging role.
Key Responsibilities
* Make up at least 50% of each body and can be asked to sit on either body in respect of a particular case.
* Lay Members will not sit on both the Complaints Committee and the Disciplinary Tribunal in relation to the same case.
* Provide an external perspective, ensuring committee discussions consider broader societal, ethical, or industry viewpoints.
* Assist in the investigation and determination of complaints concerning the conduct of Members of Faculty.
* Participate in meetings held in Edinburgh or via video conference.
Required Qualifications
* Not a qualified legal professional but brings expertise from business, finance, healthcare, HR, or community engagement.
* Demonstrable analytical and problem‑solving skills with an extensive track record in disciplines such as business or administration management, human resources or equivalent.
* Experience in professional complaint handling useful but not essential.
* Committed to diversity, multiculturalism, and inclusion.
* Must provide a full disclosure check, demonstrate good character and have no unspent convictions.
Appointment and Practical Details
* Appointed on an ad hoc basis; tenure is five years and may be renewed.
* Training will be provided; further training may be required if new rules are drafted.
* Average involvement is 3-5 days per year depending on the number of complaints.
* The position is unremunerated but travel expenses are met for Committee and Tribunal meetings.
