For more information about careers at ASPH please visit: www.asph-careers.org Detailed job description and main responsibilities Clinical Duties and Responsibilities: · To maintain a high level of clinical expertise. · To participate in the department shift system and 24/7 PPCI service. · To encourage and practice “right first time” radiography and strive to achieve quality assurance in all aspects of the radiology service. · To be responsible for the care and comfort of the patient whilst they are in the Radiology Department respecting their privacy, dignity, religious and cultural beliefs. · Perform technical administrative tasks, including accurate patient information, examination details and post processing requirements on the Radiology Information and PACS systems. This will include fixing up of images on the PACS system when required. · To undertake intravenous injection of contrast media in compliance with the Imaging Service protocol, following training and if required by the role. · To supervise, advise and mentor staff. · To work closely with the Superintendent Radiographers to provide optimum patient care and constantly seek ways of improving standards and performance. · Organise, plan and prioritise workload according to clinical need. Take responsibility for and organise sections of the department as required. · To oversee and assist in the training of new staff and continuous development of departmental staff within the area to enable adequate cover and to meet ongoing demands of the service. · To assist in the development, documentation and monitoring of protocols for working practice within the area. · To contribute fully in the regular setting, monitoring and review of performance and quality management of all aspects of the service. · To assist in monitoring the quality of service to patients and where appropriate participate in the development and implementation of proposals for improving services. · Monitor the capacity and demand of the service and assist in reviewing working practices to accommodate any shift in requirements. To take responsibility for appropriate escalation in accordance with the department procedure and communicate actions. · To participate in and promote research and audit within the areas to support good practice and provide documentation. To undertake project work. · To ensure that staff are aware of the Trust’s complaints procedure and ensure that complaints are dealt with in accordance with this procedure. Equipment Management: · To ensure knowledge of the equipment and utilise it in a safe and efficient manner according to protocols. · To ensure that the clinical environment including all equipment and accessories are kept clean and tidy. This includes cleaning between patients and participating in the daily and weekly cleaning schedules. Maintain documentation. · To monitor the performance of equipment and report and act upon all potential and actual faults and hazards. Ensure that the appropriate documentation has been completed and filed. Ensure that the appropriate staff, including the Superintendent, are kept informed. · To ensure that a quality assurance programme for all equipment is implemented and maintained, ensuring quality assurance has been performed following servicing, repair and installation. Ensure that corrective actions are taken as required. Records must be kept and filed appropriately. · To contribute to the equipment specification and selection processes as required. Management of Staff, Leadership and Development · To deputise for the Superintendent Radiographer as appropriate which may include managing radiography staff ensuring appropriate delegation and supervision of tasks. · To demonstrate leadership and to motivate staff. · To manage rotas ensuring adequate cover for service requirements in and out of hours, maximising the cost effective, efficient use of staffing resources. · To assist the Superintendent Radiographers to identify and meet staff training and development needs. · To provide training, support, guidance and supervision to Radiographers. · To identify to the Superintendent Radiographers where staff’s performance or behaviour is below an acceptable standard and to take initial informal counselling action where appropriate. · To assist the Superintendents in the investigation of incidents, concerns or complaints and to update records and provide feedback. · To deputise for the Superintendent in the undertaking of sickness absence management, as required. · To undertake any other reasonable duties at the discretion of the Operations Manager & Principal Cardiac Physiologist or his deputies Communication · To communicate effectively in an appropriate manner, complex information to patients, relatives and staff. · Demonstrate effective skills required to communicate with, reassure and gain the co-operation of patients and relatives in circumstances where they may be worried, distressed or confused. · To ensure patients are adequately informed, are able to consent to the examination and are also able to ask questions or raise concerns. · To assist the Operations Manager & Principal Cardiac Physiologist and Superintendent Radiographers in ensuring effective systems of communication are in place and utilised. · To ensure that all staff are kept informed of departmental plans, service objectives and relevant Trust issues and to encourage staff to contribute ideas, suggestions or concerns. · To liaise with and maintain close working relationships with staff within the Radiology Department/ Imaging Service and also with other hospital staff groups. · Communicate vulnerable adult and child protection concerns through the appropriate channels. · To attend staff/team meetings as required. There may be a requirement to chair meetings, take minutes and to lead or participate in task and finish groups. Responsibilities for Department Administration and Operation · To ensure that all clinical and non-clinical information records are fully and accurately completed and maintained. · To ensure all data input onto the Radiology computer system by all staff is accurate and updated as necessary. Where required, to facilitate image transfers to other Trust upon request. · To be proactive in assisting the Superintendent Radiographer to meet financial and contractual targets, and cost improvement plans (CIP). · Where required: To oversee the consumable stock ordering, receipt and recording for the area according to departmental procedures and within agreed financial limits. · To maintain levels of cleanliness and infection prevention to meet the Trust’s Infection Prevention Policies. This includes compliance with audit requirements for the area. · Maintain clean and tidy work areas and waiting rooms participating in regular cleaning rotas for work areas in line with department and Trust policy. This may require contact with bodily fluids and on occasion’s unpleasant smells. · To seek ways as to how the working environment and experience of patients and visitors within the scope of the Radiology Department can be improved. · To take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves, other staff, patients and visitors, with reference to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. · Adhere to and encourage staff to acknowledge all Local Rules, Ionising Radiation Regulations, Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations and Health & Safety procedures, including prompt reporting of accidents, equipment faults and untoward incidents and any new policies and procedures. · To ensure the highest standards of radiation protection for staff, patients and visitors and to ensure a safe working environment in respect of other health and safety issues. · To contribute to the development of, monitoring and review of Risk Management programmes in the area and report all risks/incidents as appropriate. Personal Development · Show evidence of continuing professional development and attend training courses as necessary, in keeping with Trust targets. · Keep up to date with current imaging technical developments, professional and Trust issues. · Maintain competencies in extended roles (i.e. cannulation/IV, fluoroscopy procedures) and provide evidence of doing so. · To participate in the Trust’s Appraisal programme and provide KSF evidence. This obligation will include the preparation for and attendance at appraisal/performance management interviews and completion of the associated documentation. · Contribute to the appraisal of junior staff in line with the Trust’s Appraisal Process. · This job description is not to be taken as an exhaustive list of duties and it may be reviewed in the light of changed service needs and development.
