As the first point of contact for the telecommunication service of the UHBW Trust, operators are responsible for providing an efficient switchboard/information service 24/7 to all staff and customers of the Trust.
Carry out all aspects of the responsibilities of an operator in a pleasant, courteous and professional manner at all times. Operators will be required to use their own initiative when dealing with situations outside the parameters of procedures.
Are you a calm, confident communicator who thrives in a fast-paced environment? We’re looking for a dedicated Switchboard Operator to join our team, providing a vital first point of contact for staff, patients, and the public across our hospital sites. You will handle calls from the public, staff, GPs, hospitals, and agencies, connecting them to the appropriate departments or individuals via extension, mobile, or paging systems. The role requires initiative, sensitivity, and the ability to respond appropriately to a wide range of situations, including emergencies and enquiries from anxious or vulnerable individuals.
Key Responsibilities
1. Receive and distribute calls for all hospital sites, ensuring efficient connection and information relay.
2. Operate PC-based switchboard consoles, paging systems, and radio communication devices.
3. Respond to emergency and non-emergency requests according to established procedures.
4. Monitor fire and general alarm systems, and coordinate responses as needed.
5. Maintain accurate records, update staff contact details, and manage departmental rotas.
6. Support the operation of the Emergency Admissions Centre and other critical services.
7. Provide training and mentoring to new staff as required.
8. Ensure the switchboard area is well-maintained and all equipment is functioning.
9. Participate in shift handovers, team meetings, and continuous improvement activities.
10. Uphold confidentiality, data protection, and high standards of customer service at all times.
