You’ll help keep our nation moving every single day.

A critical part of the work we do is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician, you’ll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.

Our technician community comes from diverse backgrounds, and this might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviors; if you can demonstrate these, we will provide all necessary training to ensure you work safely and competently on the network.

If you succeed, you can look forward to a rewarding and fulfilling career with a company that recently ranked in the top 50 of Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.

Please Note: There may be a requirement to work on call if you opt for the standard maintenance contract.

About the role (External)

Our technicians serve as the essential link between the team leader and operatives.

Technicians specialize in various disciplines; for this role, you’ll become a specialist in:

* Track: You’ll be responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing the track network (also known as the Permanent Way or P-Way) to ensure safety and efficiency. This is a manual role involving working with rails, sleepers, ballast, drainage, and ancillary structures.

Our technicians work outdoors in all conditions, throughout the year, day or night. The work can be demanding, often involving transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, adherence to rules, and teamwork are critical, especially when working near moving trains at high speeds.

You matter to your team

As a natural team player, you’ll also be able to lead when asked. You’ll use your skills to deliver work safely and ensure your team has the necessary competencies to meet safety standards. Being a role model for safe working behaviors and confidently challenging potential safety risks are essential to ensure everyone gets home safe each day.

You matter to us

Today’s technicians can advance to become tomorrow’s team leaders.

Your commitment to self-development and continuous learning is vital. We will provide comprehensive training to develop both technical and non-technical skills. If you’re transitioning from another industry, our structured training will equip you with the skills and confidence to build a rewarding career in rail.

While rail experience isn’t mandatory, you should demonstrate how your transferable skills meet the following criteria:

* Leadership: Ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team for safe and efficient work.
* Effective communication: Strong skills to deliver clear instructions and collaborate effectively.
* Technical skills: Knowledge and experience in inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques relevant to your discipline.
* Safety: Role model safe behaviors, implement safe systems of work, and confidently challenge unsafe situations.
* Problem-solving: Persistent in finding safe and effective solutions, keeping skills and knowledge up-to-date.
* Willingness to learn: Continuous development of skills and keeping abreast of standards and procedures.
* Relevant qualification: Ideally, hold an NVQ Level 1 or 2 in your discipline or equivalent experience.

Additional information

* Shifts: Includes days, nights, and weekends with a changing pattern.
* Outdoor working: Comfortable working in all weather conditions.
* Safe working: Employment is subject to drug and alcohol testing, medical assessment, and BPSS checks, including hearing and eyesight examinations.
* Driving: Must have a category B driving license to operate Network Rail vehicles.
* Commute times: Must live within a 60-minute commute of the location.
