The Opportunity:
Under limited supervision, responsibilities for assisting with facilities and laboratory operations, customer service delivery and environmental health/safety. Serve as a relationship leader to the customer as well as licensees. Communicate safety initiatives and other customer information for compliance with site SOPs.
Avantor Services provides a broad variety of on-site Laboratory Services for major pharmaceutical customers and works collaboratively with the client to provide resource to deliver core scientific activities and increase laboratory productivity.
AstraZeneca requires an individual in the Avantor Services organisation to join the Separation Sciences Group in the Early Oncology Chemistry department as a Research Technician.
This role underpins the laboratory support operations provided by Avantor Services, enabling R&D scientists to concentrate on their core role. The main function of the group is to support early drug discovery programmes by analysis, purification and characterisation of novel drug discovery products developed by the oncology research projects. This role is primarily lab-based, focusing on the delivery of both general and scientific technical support to these R&D laboratories in accordance with SHE guidelines and Good Laboratory Standards.
Key tasks & Responsibilities
Provide technical and operational support for the Separation Science team by helping to maintain instruments using established laboratory procedures
Assist in performing analytical tests e.g. analysis of crude samples and QC of purified material using state-of-the-art HPLC-MS and SFC-MS
Support automated platforms within the Lab, enabling the timely delivery of purified samples for biological testing
Perform routine instrument maintenance, calibration and testing as required
Assist with engineer/ external vendor visits and scheduling of maintenance by liaising with team members and internal instrument management partners
Participate in in-house meetings and presentations at internal and external meetings as required
Maintain the highest Safety Health and Environmental standards (SHE)
Work as a member of the team to ensure goals and objectives are met
Work according to established methods and SOP's
Preparation of data summaries and discussion of results
Author reports and process documents
Maintain stock levels of reagent and buffer preparation
Help with sample management within Separation Sciences
Keep line manager and Separation Sciences team members informed of developments, results, and participation in discussions of their impact on project goals
Implement and promote AstraZeneca and Avantor Health and Safety practices at all times
Skills, Knowledge & competencies
Educated to HND or BSc in a Chemistry or Life Science area. An understanding of and interest in drug discovery would be advantageous but not essential
Understanding and practical lab-based experience within an analytical chemistry laboratory
Accurate pipetting skills
Chromatography experience e.g. HPLC advantageous but not essential
Experience working with automation/ liquid handling systems advantageous but not essential.
Enthusiastic, flexible and willing to learn
High level of attention to detail
Outstanding communication skills on all levels and problem-solving capabilities with the confidence to react promptly to deliver the best service possible
Good organisational and planning skills
Proven excellent customer service focus and ability to work collaboratively
Good time management skills, ability to flex and handle multiple responsibilities and tasks on a regular basis
Able to work independently and as part of a team
An understanding of how the Avantor Services team interacts internally and externally within the organisation and how they contribute to the objectives of the business
Sound IT skills (including Microsoft Word/ Excel)
Knowledge and understanding of Good Laboratory Standards
