Overview
Are you an experienced Healthcare Support Worker ready for a new challenge? An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Centralised Outpatients Department at North Bristol NHS Trust. Our busy department sees on average 7000 patients per week in clinics covering Gate 5, Gate 12, Gate 24, Gate 36, and Cossham Hospital. We want to recruit a Senior Healthcare Support Worker who has a passion for working in the healthcare sector, with enthusiasm for learning, development, and safe patient care. You will need to be flexible to accommodate various shift times and patterns within the Trust and may occasionally cover clinics in off-site facilities in Cossham, Yate, Thornbury, and South Bristol.
Notes: the role currently does not meet the minimum £25,000 salary threshold for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship effective from 9 April 2025. Higher pay points may be available depending on NHS experience, but most new appointments start at the lower band.

Main duties
A Senior Healthcare Support Worker (SHCSW) is a core member of the team delivering direct care to patients and supporting registered practitioners to provide high-quality, compassionate healthcare in accordance with assessed needs and a care plan. You will carry out a range of clinical and non-clinical healthcare, or therapeutic tasks, under the supervision of a registered healthcare practitioner, in line with Trust values.
There will be opportunities to develop knowledge and skills specific to your needs. Training will be provided to ensure you have the required core skills and area-specific skill set. You will also be supported to obtain your care certificate if you do not already have it.

Nursing Care
* Obtain consent prior to giving care in accordance with Trust policies.
* Duties are delegated to you in line with care plans.
* Not all duties are routine; use knowledge, experience and judgment to make decisions within your area of responsibility.
* Carry out a range of clinical duties with minimal/no supervision (e.g., blood pressure monitoring, oxygen saturation, temperature, pulse and respiration rate, glucose monitoring, collection/testing of urine/faecal/sputum samples and wound swabs) ensuring high-quality patient care. The list is not exhaustive and varies by area of work.
* Participate in patient assessment, providing holistic care and escalating concerns to other clinical staff.
* Practice safe standards of care following Trust guidelines and policies; maintain concentration with occasional interruptions.
* Provide clinical care in line with infection prevention and safety policies.
* Maintain the work environment following infection control and patient safety policies.
* Develop skills to actively facilitate self-care and independence for patients.
* Promote health education aligned with clinical area and policies.
* Maintain accurate records of communication with patients, relatives and the Multidisciplinary Team regarding all aspects of care.
* Ensure equipment and stores are well maintained and report faults when found.
* Work effectively as part of a team.
Person specification
Education/Training/Qualifications
Essential criteria:
* One of the following: Level 3 RQF/SCQF, City and Guilds 3, NVQ 3, BTEC National Diploma, or equivalent experience (minimum 12 months);
* GCSE English and Maths at grade C/4 or above or equivalent;
* Completion of Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Support (maps to Apprenticeship Standard for Senior Health Care Support Worker) or equivalent experience.
Desirable criteria:
* Completion of venepuncture and physiological measurements competencies.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria:
* At least 12 months experience in a health or social care setting; prior experience as a support worker.
* Evidence of ability to work as a team; good time management and prioritisation; caring approach to patients and relatives.
Desirable criteria:
* Experience in an acute hospital setting.
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria:
* Effective written and verbal communication; accurate documentation; basic IT skills (Word, Email); understanding of healthcare policies and procedures; ability to work with minimal supervision to a high standard.
