Job Summary
Two posts (37.5 hours) for a Medical Laboratory Assistant in a UKAS accredited department.
Full training will be provided so no degree is required. The ideal candidate will have experience in a customer service environment, be computer literate with good keyboard skills and have strong attention to detail. Flexibility to work shifts in a 24/7 service is essential.
Main duties of the job
Perform routine and non‑routine tasks within Pathology: numbering samples, liaising with external laboratories for outstanding referrals, entering results into the Laboratory system, advising patients and service users on appropriate tests, invoicing private patients and handling the disposal of foetal remains.

Job Description
Central Specimen Reception (CSR) includes pre and post‑analytical tasks: checking patient demographics, numbering samples, operating centrifuges/analysers and prioritising workflow.
Technical Responsibilities
* Prepare miscellaneous, immunology and referred samples and refer to relevant departments or external labs, following UN3373 requirements.
* Prepare histology specimens, check patient/sample information, enter into LIMS, pack according to guidelines and refer to referral laboratory.
* Handle problem samples including unsuitable samples or requests.
* Monitor supplies and report low stock to senior staff, prepare stock orders for wards, departments and GP surgeries.
* Greet visitors and patients, redirect general Pathology enquiries to appropriate persons.
* Obtain outstanding results from external laboratories and report to LIMS for authorisation.
* Organise and distribute all Pathology paper reports and required documentation.
* Work according to departmental standard operating procedures at all times.
Person Specification
Education and Training – Essential
* GCSEs including English Language, Mathematics and a science subject
* NVQ Level 3 or equivalent with theoretical or applied training to diploma equivalent level of experience
* Evidence of CPD
Education and Training – Desirable
* IBMS support staff Certificate of Achievement Part I
Knowledge and Skills – Essential
* Computer literate with good keyboard skills
* Ability to multitask
* Good attention to detail
* Well‑developed concentration skills
* Work accurately under pressure, e.g. work to tight deadlines
* Basic knowledge of biomedical procedures and processing biological specimens
* Demonstrable knowledge of CSR functions including send‑away testing services, histology, clinical trials, referral reporting and private patients
Knowledge and Skills – Desirable
* Familiar with other IT databases and laboratory IT systems
* Initiative to identify non‑conformity in the workplace and apply appropriate immediate actions
Experience – Essential
* Previous experience in healthcare provision or customer service
* Achieving targets within a specified timeframe

* Practical knowledge of departmental equipment and methods within Pathology services and CSR
