Job Description

Glasgow Caledonian – the largest and leading modern university in Scotland – is a vibrant, values-led university with campuses in the heart of Glasgow and London. We're committed to high-quality education and research supporting the communities we serve, and we have strong partnerships with employers to ensure our students get the careers they dream of and deserve.

In 2025, we continue to be a Top 50 university as ranked by the highly regarded Guardian University Guide, the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, and the Daily Mail University Guide.

We’re the only Scottish university with EcoCampus Platinum accreditation and were ranked second in Scotland for sustainability in the most recent People and Planet league table.

With a wide range of professionally accredited courses and links with over 300 industry partners, we have the highest proportion of employed graduates with 92% of students in employment or further study within 15 months of graduating (HESA 2025). We also have the highest proportion of undergraduate level graduates in highly skilled occupations compared to other Scottish modern universities.

Glasgow Caledonian is Scotland’s leading provider of Graduate Apprenticeships. We have transnational partnerships around the world, supporting more than 22,000 students from nearly 120 countries, and strive for accessible education to help more people into university.

Guided by our values – integrity, responsibility, creativity and confidence – we transform the lives of the people and communities we serve.

The Directorate of Estates and Facilities Management (E&FM) are responsible for the management and day-to-day running of the University estate and ensures essential services are in place for all who work, study and visit Glasgow Caledonian. E&FM are also responsible for the strategic planning and transformation of the University estate to a modern, responsive and sustainable built environment that enhances student, staff and visitor experience and host community experience- enabling the University to perform its core purpose of delivering high-quality Learning & Teaching.

In the next 4 years the University will invest significantly in our Glasgow and London campuses via several planned capital investment projects, planned maintenance projects and multiple maintenance works and interventions. This will define the shape and form of a ‘fit for purpose’ campus that is vibrant, productive and connected.

We invite applications for an experienced Mechanical Supervisor to join the E&FM Directorate on a 1.0 FTE (35 hours per week) full-time basis due to the retirement of the existing post holder and the continuing maintenance management needs at the Glasgow campus. This role will support the Directorate in the development of an Asset Management approach for the maintenance management of the University’s estate which include buildings, architectural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing and drainage assets. This role would be ideal for an experienced Mechanical Supervisor or an experienced Commercial Mechanical Engineer ready to make their first step into management.

The role involves leading the day-to-day reactive and planned maintenance of the campus mechanical assets. The amount of mechanical assets on site is significant and include air conditioning, plumbing, drainage, boilers, pumps, pressurisation units etc. The postholder is crucial to GCU business continuity and to ensure GCU's estate and its assets are statutorily compliant and comply with Health & Safety standards.

The postholder will have excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills with relevant Hard FM and Maintenance Management experience. The postholder will supervise and control suppliers/contractors working on site with a small team of on-site contractor staff operating 5 days per week (and occasional weekends) as well as supervising essential disruptive maintenance.

Experience of working in a similar role in a Higher Education environment would be advantageous.
