Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for candidates with a background in biomedical science (or similar) currently working in or looking to work in the field of organ donation and transplantation. Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics play a vital role in ensuring the safety of transplant candidates. Working closely with the Senior Scientific Information Officer, Scientific Advisor for Organ Donation and Transplantation and H&I laboratories across the United Kingdom this important role ensures information recorded at donation and patient registration is of the highest standards in accuracy and quality. With access to a full induction and comprehensive training programme, the post-holder will provide expert scientific guidance and support to operational areas of Organ Donation and Transplantation.
Additionally, the post holder will be involved with the high-profile UK Living Donor Kidney Sharing Scheme and will continuously strive to reduce variation in the way in which HLA typing and antibody profiling is reported to NHSBT, proactively investigating and resolving any uncertainties and issues that may arise.
The post-holder will also have an opportunity to play an important role in research and development initiatives through contribution and representation at relevant scientific and clinical advisory groups and through attendance and participation at relevant conferences.
Main duties of the job
1. Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics play a vital role in ensuring the safety of transplant candidates. You will work closely with the Senior Scientific Information Officer and Scientific Advisor for Organ Donation and Transplantation along with H&I laboratories across the United Kingdom to ensure that scientific information recorded at donation and patient registration is of the highest standards in accuracy and quality.
2. You will continuously strive to reduce variation in the way in which HLA typing and antibody profiling is reported to NHSBT, proactively investigating and resolving any uncertainties and issues that may arise.
3. You will provide expert scientific guidance and support to operational areas of Organ Donation and Transplantation including responsibility for overseeing the UK Living Donor Kidney Sharing Scheme.
4. You will also play an important role in research and development initiatives through contribution and representation at relevant scientific and clinical advisory groups and through attendance and participation at relevant conferences.
5. The role will involve some travel and time away from base to meet the requirements of the post (with appropriate prior notice).
About You
Experience and Knowledge
6. Experience of working in an H&I Laboratory or significant demonstrable experience of working in the field of H&I
7. Excellent working knowledge of MS Office including Word, Excel & PowerPoint.
8. Experience of working to Quality Management Systems.
Qualifications and Training
9. Bachelor’s degree in biomedical science (or equivalent subject/level/experience)
10. Demonstrate commitment to own Continued Professional Development (CPD).
