About LGC
Under contract to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), LGC hosts and operates the UK’s combined Official Medicines Control Laboratory (OMCL) for chemical testing and the British Pharmacopoeia (BP) Commission Laboratory.
We help the MHRA protect public health by ensuring that medical products are safe for users. The laboratories operate under a Government Owned, Contractor Operated (GOCO) model at our site in Teddington.
Note: We will initially be based at the Teddington site, but will permanently relocate to The Priestley Centre, Surrey Research Park, Guildford around Autumn 2024. Please consider this when applying.
Job Description
We are seeking an Analytical Chemist to support MHRA Laboratories by conducting physico-chemical testing of chemical and herbal reference materials, including method validation and development. The role involves providing leadership to junior staff.
The successful candidate will work as part of a team of approximately 30 analytical scientists.
1. Analyze samples of over-the-counter medicines, antibiotics, herbal products, and packaging materials using HPLC, GC, Mid IR, UV spectroscopy, wet chemistry, and GC/LC-MS.
2. Draft analytical reports, methods, and safety assessments.
3. Run and interpret analytical data for validation and quality control.
4. Maintain compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards within our quality system.
5. Perform routine maintenance, daily checks, and equipment calibration.
6. Lead projects and coordinate staff to meet key performance indicators.
7. Support general laboratory activities as needed.
Qualifications
* Degree in Chemistry or related field with knowledge of HPLC, GC, IR, UV spectrometry, and titration; practical experience with at least two techniques is preferred.
* Organized, self-motivated, with strong problem-solving skills.
* Methodical, tidy, and accurate in practical work.
* Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel.
* Good written and verbal communication skills; ability to maintain clear work records.
* Adheres to health and safety regulations and maintains a clean, organized bench.
